Product Information

Every container of Alliant Smokeless Powder is backed by a century of manufacturing experience and the most exacting quality control procedures in the industry. Chemical composition, grain shape and size, and overall density are constantly checked and tested in a ballistics lab to ensure consistency.

American Select is a premium, an ultra clean powder that was designed for 12 gauge target loads, but is also great in cowboy action pistol loads. This clean burning powder creates excellent patterns and less felt recoil compared to other powders.

Warnings from the Manufacturer:

Do not exceed the loads displayed in the reloaders guide.

Never mix any two powders regardless of type, brand, or source.

Never substitute any smokeless powder for Black Powder or any Black Powder substitute.

I have been using this to load 44 Russian and 38 Special cowboy loads. It is great for light cowboy loads. It shoots straight and the recoil is light. It is also very clean shooting. It doesn't crud up my guns.

I just started reloading ...

I just started reloading 12 gauge. I wanted a very clean burning powder and American Select is excellent. I have tried two other powders and American Select is the cleanest by far.

I bought this powder when ...

I bought this powder when I got into loading .45 acp because it was one of the highest velocity loads with a 230gr jacketed bullet. It doesn't seem well suited for this round, though it does fill the case very well with 200-230 gr loads. It seems to meter "ok" even though it's a big honkin' flake size. .45acp is probably not it's forte. I've seen unburned poweder on my forearm before and it doesn't seem to burn very clean (or completely) in a 1911. Maybe better suited to a .357 or .44 revolver or something. I'd go more with titegroup or Unique etc. starting out with .45 acp if I did it over again. Probably a good powder in the wrong cartridge in my case.

I've been reloading for over 40 years and have used many powders. As an avid cowboy action shooter American Select is the only powder you need. Handgun and shotgun it is the cleanest powder I have ever used. Try it and I think that you will be pleased.

Grabbed a bottle of ...

Grabbed a bottle of American Select because it was on discount. Found out it works great for 7/8oz 12 ga skeet loads. Patterns are excellent with Rem hulls, Figure 8s, Win 209 and American select. Clean burning as well!

This is a great ...

This is a great all-purpose powder. I've used it for 38/357 and 9mm. I've even used it for light cowboy loads; although my load doesn't take up much space in .357 brass, I've never had a problem pushing 125 and 158 grain cast bullets down the barrel of my Marlin. This is a fast-burning powder. A little bit goes a long way. It is the cleanest powder I have ever used. Although I don't reload shotgun shells, according to Alliant, it's good for that, too. I believe them!

I like using American Select because it burns clean and having one powder suites my needs for a variety of calibers and loads. I use it for reloading my 12ga shotshells on my MEC, 38spcl and 45acp calibers on my Dillon RL500.

I use this in my .45 ACP ...

I use this in my .45 ACP to duplicate the velocities of my carry load. Yes, there are more accurate powders for the .45 ACP, but American Select has a good balance between accuracy and velocity--my practice loads are (perhaps not unexpectedly) actually more accurate than the premium-priced self-defense rounds I use for carry. It meters consistently out of a Dillon 550, and lot-to-lot variation on the chronograph is negligible. It is relatively fast, so smaller charges are necessary, thereby extending the per-pound lifespan. Often overlooked in reloading databases, I urge those reloading for .45 ACP to give a pound of this a try. And as a bonus, for those who have an aversion to cleaning their weapon after use, this is cleaner than most.
