Ah... the round with the supposedly legendary "stopping power" according to the OSS. I personally think it's a great round but I had one FTF (might be the gun so I'll give it the benefit of the doubt) and two that failed to fire. Pulled the trigger about 3 times on each down range but ya know... A dead primer is a dead primer which forces me to give it a 3 out of 5 stars, one for each dead primer due to the fact that this unreliability is unacceptable when it really matters. Luckily, the Federal HSTs are superior (plus cheaper) and have never failed me even after firing more than a thousand rounds of it. I suggest everybody else buy the HSTs over the HS from Midway by the truck load and just self your hydras but that's just my opinion.

I find this round very accurate and reliable. This is my go-to round in .45ACP. The nickel cases don't corrode After YEARS of storing in loaded magazines. They feed in single stack and box magazines and eject vigorously. I highly recommend this round.

Excellent time tested and proven stopper for this caliber. Excellent function in my Sig Sauer P220 .45 ACP, my primary carry weapon. Federal/ATK has the best quality control on the market and it shows. I sleep well at night knowing that this is what is chambered in my weapon.

I believed in the Federal hydra-shock until this afternoon. Shot a 110LB + sow, broad side behind the front shoulder, perfect shot placement. The bullet passed through her and entered another sow in exactly the same spot and came to rest in the second sow's far shoulder. Bullet was recovered upon cleaning with no bullet expansion what so ever! Shot with a Glock 36. Pigs are tough animals, even smaller ones, the bullet went through 20 plus inches of tough hide, bone, muscle, and vitals with zero expansion! Dont get me wrong, at no point did the bullet fail to kill two pigs with one shot(all luck)but this is really expensive hard ball in my opinion.

Hydra-Shok performs very well in gelatin, as do most bullets. However for self defense the wound channel is not consistent nor deep. Still reliable to fire, stick with bullets the expand sharp so when they penetrate they cut open the wound channel instead of pushing to fibers aside. Look for bullets that get 15-18" penetration in gelatin to equal enough to reach vital areas in the human body for quick take downs. Thats personal defense.

I have put 5 boxes through my Springfield XD without a single malfunction. Shooting textbooks, they way out-performed the Winchester defense rounds for depositing energy and penetration (~3" in hardcover textbook). I have carried this round everyday for four years now and would never select a different one.

I have carried this ammo since they came out in the 1980's. I have seen them recovered from ballistic gelatin, wild boar, deer.The wound channel is enormous for a slow 230 grain round. I lend that to their accurate & controlled expansion and the kinetic energy transferred from the internal tip.I shot hundreds of these rounds through my Sig P220 at Gunsight in the 80's. As a test I did not clean my gun the entire week and did not experience a single misfeed, misfire, stove-pipe, or malfunction. I could not say that for the plastic Glocks, Berettas, or Smith's that were in attendance.An excellent round that you can bet your life on... it has saved mine countless times!

This was the first brand of defense ammo I purchased years ago and it's what I still carry in my Springfield 1911 Mil-Spec and Service model Springfield XD .45 ACP. I have some +P ammo and other defensive ammo, but the Hydrashock is my favorite. It has been around a long time and with a proven track record. Other manufacturers compare their rounds to the Federal Hydrashock as it is the standard in personal defense.
