Never thought this thing ...

Never thought this thing could work but my experience with other Lee Products proved otherwise so I made the purchase. My experience has been:1) No hype in Lee's claim that your groups can improve in the first batch you load. Mind shrunk 1/4" and could have been smaller if I skipped my morning coffee.2) Easy to use and obtain better consistency than factory ammo. I was surprised when I began measuring and comparing my first handloads to factory loads. 3) Get the Lee Pocket Primer Cleaner at the same time. This makes it much easier to seat the primer and requires less effort. Others have noted that they have had primers go off when seating. I have not had this problem yet and attribute it to cleaning the primer pocket.4) You can "feel" the process and get a good idea of how well each step is proceeding. This is useful for a beginner.5) As I had to learn the skills without the benefit of a experienced loader to guide me, the simplicity of the kit is great for a beginner like me and a great way for me to learn the skills needed to transition to more advanced equipment and techniques.6) The kit looks like it will take forever to load a single round. Not so, it is possible to load rounds fairly quickly with some practice. The main constraint is metering the powder charge and this has to be performed when using any type of metallic reloading equipment.7) I found that using the crimping tool takes some practice before getting it down but since most of my rounds are for target/plinking, I normally don't crimp anyway.All in all a very good product, especially for someone who is just starting out.

I bought this set-up looking to get into reloading for minimal cost. Well, I guess I got what I paid for. The first die I received horribly misshaped my brass. After contacting Lee they sent me a new die, coincidentally having entirely different model number, I suspect that it was the wrong one in the package to start with. If not it was some mighty shoddy machining as the die didn't even have a taper for the shoulder. They were also nice enough to send a note that it was tested, and included a sized Lake City case to show that it was working. Well, it was not. The neck tension is not nearly enough. With my once fired Federal brass there is barely enough tension to hold the bullet from falling into the case. The Lake City proof brass they included would not hold the bullet and it just falls right into the case. I thought maybe using the crimp feature of the die would be enough to hold the bullet in so I flipped it over and tried the crimping end of the tool. All that did was make marks on the shoulder of the case. Upon further inspection the way it is machined it doesn't even contact the neck of the brass. How could it crimp the neck, if it doesn't even touch it? I'm promptly sending this set back to Midway and am purchasing a press and dies so I at least have control over neck tension. I would not recommend this product due to its inability to perform any advertised function other then depriming, which it did do well. Priming was scary and took way more effort than it should, even with cleaned and chamfered primer pockets, it took way more than a few light taps to achieve. I have not yet lost all hope on Lee, but will be sticking solely to the upper end of their products.

excellent way to get started

The Lee Loaders have been around for years (once offered in almost 80 different calibers), so this in itself should say something about the quality. For the shooter who is new to reloading (or those who have a limited budget or no space for a full set up),this is an excellent start. Be aware however that this tool will only neck size the case, so those folks using semi-autos may have trouble with it. For the bolt action/single shot crowd, You will be pleasantly surprised just how good this tool is. Even if you decide to upgrade to a full reloading set up in the future, You'll find yourself still using some of the parts of this kit as a matter of convienence. You can use the deprime section before chucking the cases in a tumbler for clean up, and the powder measure works well for throwing charges onto a scale as well as doubling as a powder trickler. The bullet seater works well on tryout loads when you don't want to mess with readjusting your regular seater die settings.
Overall... well made, durable, easy to understand and use, small and portable, great customer service from Lee, all at less cost than most conventional die sets. This is one product that does not disapoint.

Works like stated, use this kit in conjunction with a reloading press to save time. This kit can deprime, and neck size without lube. Saving you a lot of time! It's faster to deprime and necksize on this kit than it is on a press. CONS: Depriming rod will break if you try to deprime military brass. To fix this, purchase a universal decapping and depriming pin. Pros: Makes initial case prep extremely fast. Saves a lot of time, and is portable!

I bought the Lee .223 hand reloader having absolutely no reloading experience at all. I found it to be very easy to operate once you read and understand the instructions and you follow them. I had one mishap with the primer going off, it startled me but I was not surprised. I was sitting in living room floor talking to my old lady and watching TV using my knee to muffle the noise of seating the primer. I never had one go off while properly seating the primer. I know that if a primer goes off in the Lee reloader I may be startled but not injured. Having started with the Lee hand reloader it has encouraged me to reload all my ammo and I do now. It is well worth the money. Suggest that you get a case trimmer and alternate means to measure your powder for more precise loads. The only down falls I can find is that it does not fully resize cases and it is little noisy. It is ideal for working up loads at the target range. Worth every penny.

Bought this product a couple of months ago, mostly to keep as a 'back-up,' without the intention of reloading. My dad had one of the shot shell Lee loaders from when he was in school, so I figured it must be OK. One day I bought a reloading book and accumulated some reloading components and started whacking away just for the heck of it (being safe about it, of course), and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the kit. I assumed it would only be useful for 'junk' plinking rounds, and wouldn't be a very precise kit, considering its price. On the contrary, everything fit very snugly and was very well-machined. Easy to work with and straightforward. My dad and I made my first 100 rounds in about 3 (lazy) hours, including set up and learning curve. However, going slower prevents potential problems. Have not had a problem with primers igniting from the hammer blow, even when getting pretty aggressive with it. I do suggest getting a scale/trickler, powder measure, or the Lee scoop set as the scoop limits you to certain powders. Also, a set of calipers for setting up the OAL of the cartridge. Once I set it and locked it, I only had an OAL drift of about .002". It does only neck size, but for a bolt-action that's not a problem, and it probably increases accuracy.Overall, very satisfied with Mr. Lee's tool set. Great for getting started or reloading only a few rounds per month (<200).Pros: Cheap, easy, Non-intimidating kit for beginners. Great for someone who loads small amounts. Small and portable. High-quality. Don't need many 'accessory' tools to get started (just calipers, at least, and probably a scale)Cons: Can get noisy with all the hammering. Not good if you're whacking away at 10PM in your apartment. Slow. Powder scoop isn't very versatile.

great product beats dies costing more than $100 slow but the results make up for it. get the auto hand primer by lee no more worries about the primer being struck too hard I have at least 8 of these dies for different calibers and they beat the other dies every time.

Stick it in your pocket with a plastic hammer, some powder canisters and primers and go to the range. Fine-tune your loads. It is great for this. Neck-sizes only. Lasts forever. (Bought mine over thirty years ago.) Simple to use. Cheap. Accurate. Almost impossible to use it wrong. What more could you want? Handy as a pocket on your shirt.

This is a great little loading kit for necked down rifle cartridges, I found it incredibly easy to use with a small dead blow mallet and some case lube, I highly recommend it for anyone starting to reload on a budget. NOTE; JUST A SMALL WARNING TO ANYONE THINKING ABOUT THIS KIT FOR PISTOL CARTRIDGES. I got the same kit for .45 acp and was not thrilled, it is very difficult to full length size pistol cases with this kit, not impossible, just very difficult, see my .45 acp loader review for details.

I use the loaders in a few calibers and you can make some nice ammo, w great accuracy. Ive found that most 223/5.56 have crimped primers, and the primer pocket must be reamed to seat the primer.
