Sometimes the low-tech solution is also the best solution. This is Remington's classic version of the .38+P "FBI Load." It is a superb snubby load and a great addition to Midway's inventory. Multiple tests suggest this soft lead hollow point will give you around 800 fps from a 2" barrel -- and expand nicely. Penetration is also great (11" to 12" in gelatin). Mas Ayoob once described it as the only .38 load with enough thump for bowling pins. Many older cops swore by it.Basically, for knowledgeable shooters who CCW a .38 snub, the choice of carry ammo boils down to either this "FBI load" (Winchester also sells a version) or the new, high-tech Speer Gold Dot 135 grain jacketed +P load. Both are good loads. However, after much research and shooting, I chose the Remington as my CCW ammo in a Taurus 85UL. It is more accurate than the Speer 135 grainer, shooting right to point of aim in the Taurus (most .38s, it seems, are still sighted for the traditional 158 grain bullet weight). Also, recoil is actually worse with the Speer load, which uses a very fast, sharp-recoiling charge. The Remington has a heavier bullet but feels lower in pressure. A time-tested winner.

Maybe I got a bad lot, but out of my SP101 2-3 out of every 10 rounds keyholed at 15 yards. The shots that didn't keyhole were right at point of aim, but the keyholed rounds could be anywhere. I have used Rem 158 grain standard pressure round nose, 357 158 grain S&B FMJ, 357 158 grain S&B soft point, and Blazer 357 158 grain HP all without a problem. I had good luck with this load in a Rossi 38 4" and that's why I bought them, but the snubby SP101 doesn't like them at all. If you are shooting a 2" barrel I would suggest buying one box first just in case.

Outstanding 2" bbl. self-defense load. Soft lead bullets open up well at lower velocities of the light short barrel revolvers. Old load by FBI and Dallas PD that proved its merit under fire. It does not need a fancy copper jacket bullet to work.

Fired through my S&W 642 ...

Fired through my S&W 642 Airweight, my hands took a beating, but accuracy was excellent. I figured I would not even notice the extra recoil if my life was ever on the line. I cannot say I've tested this load, but I've read in several articles over the years that this 158 gr +P load is the best defense load for the .38 snub.

My Taurus M85 does NOT ...

My Taurus M85 does NOT like these loads. Both boxes I purchased had dented and/or misshaped cones. There was excessive primer seal all over some of the primers. They blew right over the rifling in my barrel and every one of the rounds I fired (15) key holed at 10 yards. Point of Impact (POI) was consistent but 6 inches high and 4 inches right of Point of Aim (POA). Recoil was mild-ish for me. Barrel leading was excessive. I have had no problems with any other brand I have fired.

The problem with jacketed bullets in snub-nose revolvers is simple - there's not enough velocity generated to reliably overcome the jacket and expand consistently. No jacket to overcome = consistent expansion. This load was the standard back in the days when most cops carried .38 revolvers and this load rarely failed. This load provides proven performance without .357 Magnum recoil and muzzle blast. No matter what comes along as the "latest and greatest" or most "high tech round you can buy", nothing will work as good as the old standby - the 158gr +P lead semi-wadcutter HP.

Clean shooting, great velocity for 158gr .38. Once upon a time the best defense load for .38 There are better choices now for personal defense that are bonded, expand better at low velocity, and have less muzzle flash, i.e. Speer Gold Dot, Winchester PDX1.

I found this in rather poor condition for Remington Express ammo. There was primer seal all over the base of the cases. The soft hollow points were dented and not perfectly round. Looks like poor quality control for some top line ammo. I like the Winchester LSWCHP better.

No other .38 Spl load outperformed this one out of a 2" barrel, in all test conditions (be sure you stick with THIS Remington load -- R38S12). Similar results abound at many different labs. If you can handle it through a +P rated J-frame, it's the one to carry.
