Definition for "picatinny rail" : A term for a mounting rail system for small arms made an official standard for US military weapons in 1995. The system is very similar in dimensions and use as the traditional Weaver-style mounting system. There are two major differences between the Weaver-style and Picatinny Rail mounting systems. Picatinny grooves are .206" wide and have a consistent center-to-center width of .394" while the Weaver-style grooves are .180" wide and do not always have consistent center-to-center widths. Most Weaver-style accessories will fit the Picatinny system however Picatinny accessories will not fit the Weaver-style system.
