Hodgdon H4895 is the most versatileHodgdon rifle powder. This member of the Extreme Extruded line powder is great for 17 Remington, 250-3000 Savage, 308 Winchester and 458 Winchester, to name just a few. It is amazingly accurate in every cartridge where it is listed in Hodgdon load data. It had its origin in the 30-06 as a military powder and was the first powder Hodgdon sold to the loading public.

Comments about Hodgdon H4895 Smokeless Gun Powder 8 lb:

I load a range of cartridges with this powder. It is very forgiving and at least reasonably accurate in every rifle I load for (223, 270, 7-08, 30-06, 30-30 and 243)

The best part is the versatility - Basicaly works good in any common rifle cartridge and you can do reduced loads without the chance of dangerous pressures or erratic ignition from too little powder. This all means that one powder can load everything you have.

The worst part is that this stuff is very dirty and leaves lots of carbon fouling.

I use H4895 to load for ...

I use H4895 to load for 223 with medium weight bullets (53 Grains). In a couple of different rifles it produces better accuracy than anything else I have tried, and I have tried 2230, 4320, BLC(2) , 3031, etc.

This is a very versatile ...

This is a very versatile powder that does very well in a variety of applications. I started working with this powder initially to load a 300 WSM down for my young daughter to start practicing with to get ready for deer hunting. Discovered that loading it down to less than 30-30 velocities produced very light recoil, very accurate loads. As she got older, we kept increasing the powder charges until we got to 300 Savage levels. Then worked with it to download a 25 WSSM. Very good results with that as well, and did it again with a 270 Win. Just an excellent powder for developing youth loads with. Finally I started experimenting with my match (High Power and F-Class) load and found out of my AR I got better accuracy and more velocity than 'the gold standard' (RL-15). Finally switched all but one of our 223's over to 4895 because we got better loads at 600 yards and beyond. This is one powder that has earned a permanent position on my bench due to its ability to work well in a variety of applications, atmospheric conditions, and chamberings. It handles loading up to full power match long range loads every bit as well as loading down to youth deer-whacking loads. I was able to shoot out of my class last year after I switched to this powder, and the kids have hammered a couple of deer now, too. More versatile than Varget and meters better than Varget. However, it is a stick powder so it doesn't meter as well as stuff like H-380.

I have a custom build 308 ...

I have a custom build 308 Winchester, built on a Rem 700 SA. I tried several different powders including Varget and Reloader 15 at various charges. I found that for my rifle the H4895 produced the most consistent groups, usually well below .25" and one 0" group at 100 yards and also around .75" at 300 when I do my part. This powder is the "crescent wrench" of powders for small and medium bore rifles, and I have found it to be very consistent during temperature changes. I would highly recommend this for anyone developing a load for 243, 308 etc.

Being a DIE HARD IMR user ...

Being a DIE HARD IMR user it took a lot to convince me to add another powder to my inventory. Temps in TX exceed 90 F and IMR would shoot consistently low. H 4895 for 22-250, 7mm-08 , .308 and , 30-06 cal shot better than expected and in 8lbs lots no consistency complaints. 1/4 inch groups at 100 yds and 1/2" groups at 90 degree plus temps , who can complain ?NOW if only H 414 did not need to use Magnum Rifle primers.....

I use H-4895 and IMR-4895 ...

I use H-4895 and IMR-4895 on a regular basis in match loads for M-1A and M-1 Garand. I tend to prefer the IMR powder simply because that is exactly what the military manual specifies for the match loads. Look it up in TM-43-0001-27, its available online if you search for it (and you should look it up because its quite interesting). I cant tell any practical performance difference between the two, however all the sources say the H-4895 burns a tick faster than the IMR equivalent, and it must as the H-4895 leaves a little less fouling in the gas systems on both rifles. In either case this is an exceptionally good powder for a semi-automatic .30 rifle as it does not generate as much pressure as Varget, which means your action gets less abuse when you load with H-4895. It also works very well when used in bolt action rifles again due to the pressure, the 4895 produces a long heavy shove where a lot of other powders produce a sharp punch upon firing.

4895 works well enough. Very consistent velocities, but does not meter quite as well as Varget. If your loading something in the .308 family of cases it will work just fine.

I tried this powder ...

I tried this powder because I was looking for a low recoil load for my Marlin 336 in .30-30 to use for Cowboy Rifle Silhouette. I stumbled across a youth load on the Hodgdon web site using 130 grain flat nose bullets. The load is impressive. It will knock down all the targets out to 200 meters and recoil is light enough to shoot it all day. You will get a few grains of unburned powder in the barrel but it has no effect on accuracy. I think this load would be a great short range deer load too.
