These pads have a leather textured face, a hollow side core design and a white line base. Includes slide-in storage peg to prevent compression of pad during long-term storage. I bought this pad for my ...

I bought this pad for my sporterized 30-06 walnut stock. The smallest pad available was slightly longer (1/2") and wider (1/8") than the butt of my rifle. I shot the rifle today about 30 times and it was a real pleasure to shoot. The old recoil pad was 35 years old and had become age-hardened, and just beat my shoulder up. This pad should have a Ten Star rating; it is really nice.Be sure to measure your gun butt dimensions and buy the pad which is only slightly larger in length AND width. Do NOT buy a severely oversized pad.My installation went this way: (Read Pachmayr's instructions in detail.)1. Remove old pad. Drill out old screw holes. Fill old holes with exact-fitting dowel stick. I used 3/16" dowels. Do not skip this part. Avoid oak dowel if the new screws for the new pad will touch the dowels, as the pilot hole that you have to drill for the new screws will be difficult to drill straight.2. Hold the new pad over the gun butt (centered and overlapped on all four sides) to be sure that it is indeed bigger than the gun butt in both directions. If the dimensions of the new pad are much larger than the gun butt consider whether you should purchase a smaller pad that is only slightly larger than the gun butt. Remember that you have to sand/grind away all of the excess perimeter material.3. Carefully insert the new screws into the new pad allowing them to protrude through the other side of the pad about 1/4". Make a mental note where the screws will be penetrating the gun butt while making sure that the pad is overlapping all four sides of the butt. Be sure that the screws will be penetrating the butt along the vertical centerline of the gun butt.4. Mark the first screw hole location. (You can make a preliminary mark by pressing on one of the screw heads to "dent" the gun butt.) Check the hole location again to be sure. Hole should be centered (side to side) on the butt.
