The Berger Hunting bullet line features VLD match grade bullets that have the highest possible ballistic coefficient designed for 300 yards or more. Berger recommends that the bullets be seated to touch the rifling for best accuracy. Note, however, that the resulting cartridge overall length may be too long for some magazines. The VLD design incorporates a sharp nose that allows the bullet to penetrate 2" to 3" before it starts to expand. After the initial expansion, the bullet will shed between 40% and 85% of its weight as shrapnel into the surrounding tissue (internal organs). The combination between the shrapnel and the hydrostatic shock produces a massive wound cavity within the vital area that will be 13" - 15" long. This is not loaded ammunition.

I've tested these bullets using Lapua brass in a custom built 6.5 x 55 Swedish with a 26" Douglas Air Grade Match Barrel 1:8 twist and held sub .795" groups at 200 yards. I was so impressed that I ordered .308 VLD's to shoot in my custom built .308 and got the same results. Berger VLD bullets won't let you down if you want accuracy!

I gave this bullet 1 star because it is labeled a "hunting" bullet. If I was shooting it for target it would get 5stars. I get easy sub 1\2in groups at 100 meters in my Tikka T3 6.5X55. However I have killed over 30 deer exotics, Whitetail and Aoudad with this bullet and the results are 50%. Half the time it explodes and is devastating with quick kills and large blood trails if not dead right there. Other half of the time it acts as an FMJ and drills right through leaving little damage resulting in needing a follow up shot or lost animal. I have had failure on ranges 50-250yards on small deer and larger game. I recommend for target shooting but will no longer be hunting with the 130gr VLD or any VLD bullet.

These are lasers in my Savage .260. I have taken whitetail out to 650 yds. with these and I have never had to track a single one of them. What's not to like about them?

I'm loading these in a Ruger No. 1 in 6.5x55. Contrary to many negative things I've read about the No. 1, my rifle can actually shoot quite well. With these bullets, H4350, Lapua brass, and CCI200 primers, I've fired numerous sub-moa 3 shot groups at 100 yards (two groups actually less than 0.75 inch). These groups were fired using various seating depths so apparently my rifle isn't difficult to tune with these bullets. The load I settled on has the bullet about 0.010" off the lands. Muzzle velocity is chronographed at just a touch over 2800 fps. I killed two deer recently with them. Both were a little less than 50 yards and the shots were more or less textbook - broadside, double-lung, no larger bone than a rib in the way. Entrance hole was difficult to find, exit hole was about golf-ball size. Neither deer was large, and neither dropped in it's tracks. One made it 20 yards, the other ran something under 100 yards with a good blood trail. The damage done to the lungs supports Berger's claim that the bullet doesn't expand until 3 inches or so penetration, as the first lung contacted didn't show a lot of damage until the bullet was most of the way through. The second lung (off-side) was a mess. Long story short, they did the job I wanted. Still not sure how they'd do if I took an angled shot through a shoulder, but I imagine they'd be fine. I probably won't buy again - I think they're a great product, but for my use (hunting with relatively close shots), there's no reason to spend extra money on special bullets that help you extend your effective range. If they had "dropped the deer in their tracks," with those shots, maybe I'd feel differently. Some other (cheaper) bullets seem to shoot almost as well out of my rifle, and they've worked great on deer for me out of other calibers at all sorts of ranges, so I'll probably just stick with them once I've used up the Bergers.

Honestly, I'm a little ...

Honestly, I'm a little disappointed in the consistency. Ogive to tip measurements varied to as much a .070 causing these to not fit in the box of my Ruger M77 .260. So, if you have a single shot, go for it. Otherwise I'd hold off. The picture is very deceptive of just how long this bullet is. The ogive is WAY away from the tip! I only load .050 from the lands and my internal box is 2.885 long, and I still can't make em work. Long and short, if you care about distant to the lands, this bullet probably won't work for you unless you have a custom rifle.

Purchased these bullets ...

Purchased these bullets for a custom XP-100 w/17" barrel chambered in .260 Remington.Final load is producing groups in the .2s" with H4350, CCI-LR primers and Hornady .308 Match brass necked down. Bullets are seated just off the lands. Out of a specialty pistol, I'm more than pleased! They shoot exceptionally well out to 300 yards (furthest so far).I then took them out and used them to harvest 2 feral hogs. One weighing 275 pounds and the other scaled 120 pounds.If you do your part behind the trigger, these are awesome bullets for targets AND game. I just ordered another box.

I was looking for an ...

I was looking for an accurate and lethal hunting bullet for my CZ 550 6.5x55 and tried Hornady A-max 120,s and Nosler 130 AccuBond. Both shot well, but not as well as the Bergers. It will shoot sub 1/2 inch 100 yd all day and I took a nice 14 inch antelope in New Mexico this past Sept @ 304 yds that crumpled in its tracks with a quartering forward shot that hit the point of the shoulder and exploded in the lungs. Amazing damage on the inside.

Used this bullet in a ...

Used this bullet in a Ruger M-77 Hawkeye with a 26 inch barrel. ( 6.5 Creedmoor ) Hit a 125 pound sow at 200 yards. Slight quartering away shot hit just behind right shoulder, traveled towards the chest cavity /left shoulder area. Sow dropped in its tracks, bullet did not exit. Internal damage was significant, looked like a bomb went off in there. Accuracy goes without saying with these bullets, no more than 1/2 inch at 100 yards. Powder used was W-760.

I have used the 140gr VLDs in 6.5 and 115gr in .257 on game with excellent results. The accuracy of the 130s matches the others and I expect similar results in the hunting arena as well.

This bullet worked well ...

This bullet worked well in my .264 win mag for deer this last fall, one deer at 502 yds. wind drifted bullet off, so shot placement wasn't perfect but the energy of this bullet is amazing and gave me time to adjust and make the kill shot.
