As stated, a belt sander ...

As stated, a belt sander is mandatory for shaping. The large size pad has an internal brass plate, unseen, directly behind the black plastic base, which limits minimum grind width to 1.57". Found this, when grinding to fit my McMillan A5. Wish this info was spec'd on this product info page. Now I need to order a medium width, if I want a professional looking pad install. I ended up with a 1/8"x1" slot on one side of the pad , where I ground thru to the brass plate.

The pad was not TOO ...

The pad was not TOO difficult to install, following the enclosed directions, but access to a belt sander is mandatory for a quality installation. The pad is a bit "sticky" (i.e. soft rubber that will grab your clothing as you mount the gun) which is fine for a high-powered rifle, but probably wouldn't serve well on a shotgun where fast mounting is important.

I found this product to be very easy to install and adapt to the way I wanted it to fit on my rifle. I am very pleased with the way it looks and my last trip to the range confirmed it is a very good recoil pad.

Not quite as recoil ...

Not quite as recoil absorbing as a Rem. R-3 or Limbsaver, BUT you can have the Decelorator ground to fit by a good gunsmith. This is the ONLY way that you will get a PERFECT fit on your rifle's butt stock. I did the research by calling Remington and others.

For my first home install ...

For my first home install I thought it went very well and easy. Instructions that come with it are very good, easy to follow. I used a hand belt sander that I just flipped over and it worked great. 80 then 220 grit sand paper and TAKE YOUR TIME. I used a hack saw to trim the end that would have taken along time to sand. Cut fine. Put the pad in the freezer for an hour before starting and before final sanding. Firms it up nice. Don't let the sander bounce or it will put a ripple in it. All and all a great product that anyone with a little skill and time can do. Also, really reduced the felt recoil on the old Remington 11 it went on.
