This is my second review ...

This is my second review of this product, as I have finished the stock refinishing. I am not completely satisfied with the finish. It is certainly better than what I started with, but not what I consider good. This is primarily due to the filler material that was in the kit. As I mentioned in my previous review, the filler was very dry (old?) and I was unsure what solvent to use to make it more liquid. The other comment I have is the same as another reviewer, that the instructions on how to finish stock checkering is lacking. It does not exist in the DVD. The main reason the stock did not come out well is the filler. It did not do a good job and was very difficult to remove the excess. The final finish does not stick to the filler and is the reason my stock does not look good. The excess filler was VERY difficult to remove by the process described. I will likely refinish the stock again with another kit of different manufacturer. In all fairness, I must mention that I have been involved with technical writing for manufacturing and it is not an easy task, and requires many re-writes before acceptable. These instructions are lacking in some areas and need to be improved to address the areas mentioned.

This is a good product and contains everything you need to re-finish a stock except for gloves and some other common stuff. Reading through other comments there are a couple points to make:1) There are written instructions (PDF) for this kit at the miles gilbert website (www.milesgilbert.com) in the product description there. 2) The DVD asks you to mix a diluted solution of stain but the bottle doesn't contain the instructions for a diluted soln. I don't know what the manufacturer recommends but I mixed it 1 part stain to 7 parts water as some other stains indicate. This makes a maximum of 8 fluid ounces of stain. Seemed to work okay for my stock.

I am about 85% of the way through the process on my Remington 3200. Just applied the fourth coat of the finish. The finish is a bit difficult to work with - runs and streaks, but seems to smooth out with some VERY careful sanding with 400 to 600 grit sand paper. I understand that the rottenstone phase can take care of those issues. One issue is that there doesn't seem to be enough of the grain filler. It dries out quickly in the tube so I had to buy another entire kit. The components are not available separately which would be helpful.

good kit, some items were unusable but you just improvise and use common sense and do a little research on stock refinishing other than video and you will be alright. all materials that come with kit that are dry or too sticky can always be brought back to life with a little mineral spirits.

Product worked good. Make sure you do this in a controlled climate. I had a hard time with runs and streaks but I think it was due to the change in temperature and humidity. Also do not judge what the finish is going to look like until the final rottenstone polish is done. I was pretty disappointed until I got to this step. Now the finish is as smooth as glass and looks very good. This was my first stock also so there are a couple imperfections but I can still guarantee that the finish is better than the gun came with new. As far as everyones comments about the filler being dry or the sealer being bad, call midway I am sure they would make it right.

This product has everything you need to refinish a stock, including an instructional DVD. Watch the video and follow the process step by step and you will have excellent results. Do not get in a hurry and rush the steps. Allow the proper time between oil coats and refer back to video often.

I'm on the fourth coat of finish and its coming out ok. It is a LONG process. Over a week so far. I agree with some of the other comments, there is not much information on the checkering. Other than that, it's a good kit. I would buy another.

This seems to be a decent refinishing kit and contains all that is needed to do a good job, even though I have not finished using it. I rated it low because the stain bottle that came with the kit had leaked during shipping. The replacement bottle that was shipped leaked even more during shipment. The filler that came with the kit was difficult to use since it was very dry. I could hardly get it to come out of the tube. I suspect that the kit I received was very old. I am in the process of filling the grain now and it is not easy. If you get a kit that the stain has not leaked all over everything and has not been on the shelf for some time, you will be happy with it.

I purchased two of these kits and used the first on a stock that was a complete piece of junk, just to learn the process. I'm blown away by how nicely that stock turned out, and how simple the process was. The kit was complete and the DVD made the process extremely easy. I've extremely excited to see how it does on the replacement stocks I'm ordering in the near future.
