Product Information

Varmint Express rimfire ammunition is specifically designed for supremely accurate long-range shooting. Loaded with an XTP bullet, each round features a performance-improved point that has six (6) precise folds to divide the bullet into symmetrical sections and initiate controlled expansion at low velocities while not fragmenting at higher velocities. They expand reliably at a wide range of velocities for a deep, terminal penetration with every shot. The XTP bullet has a swaged core and drawn copper jacket to ensure uniform expansion and in-flight stability. This ammunition is new production.

My son and I use our 17HMR's for a lot of small game hunting. Last winter I ordered several boxes of this for some fox hunting. This bullet has much better penetration than the ballistic tip type bullets and dropped every fox hit in the rib cage. There were even 6 coyotes that came to the call and all 6 were brought down with well-placed rib cage shots. I hit one in the shoulder and he took off on a run and one of the follow up shots brought him down at 175 yards. The coyote was on a run facing away and the bullet hit just in front of the hip and traveled all the way into the rib cage. I was really impressed with the penetration of this bullet. I would highly recommend this round for any game from a Fox in size on down. I will stick to my .223 and 22-250 for the coyotes as I really feel the 17HMR is just to light to do a good job on the big dogs.

I was very surprised to be unhappy with a Hornady product and for all I know I just got unlucky with a bad box. 3 out of the first 5 shots I fired through my savage 93r17 btv came out with spilt casings towards the rim. Like I said I may have just gotten a bad box and will try another box because I believe Hornady makes a great product... dont know what happened with the box I bought???

Picked up a savage thumbhole late this summer and as was recomended by some of these reviews tried both the Honady 17gr and 20gr. The 17grain was slightly more accurate but because they were on back order I ordered 500 of the 20grain for a trip to Montana where I would spends a couple of days prairie dog hunting.
The 20grain is probably better for fox, coyote size game than praire dogs as I had problems with them zipping right through without much expansion, requiring more multiple hits to kill than I like to see. That was my only complaint and I'm pretty sure the 17 grain is more explosive and will be whats in my gun next years.
When the wind lays down this is a sweet little gun to shoot, but gets blown around with a cross wind.

This ammo did not shoot as well in my savage 93 as the 17 grain V-max. The V-max groups at .75" or less at 100 yards. This ammo was shooting 1" - 1.25" on the same day off of a solid bench rest w/ cleaning in between each type. it seems to me that a polymer tipped (v-max) bullet would fly better than an open hollow point bullet (XTP).

I have both hmr & mach2 in the savage 9317 in the hmr I have a problem splitting case's,other than that the cartridge preforms flawlessly!!!!

First off if you have a Mossberg 817 this will not stabilize and shoots 5 inch groups at 50 yards. Out of my savage 93 shoots 1/4 inch groups at 50 yards. Hits squirrels hard but does not explode them like v-max bullets. Would have gotten 5 stars if I hadn't shot it out of my Mossberg.

In my Savage Mark II BTVS... these shoot the best. It took 50 rounds on a new barrel to tighten up and then 1" at 100 yards is no problem if I do my part. I've used the 17gn Hornady V-Max and they don't perform as well with wind. These 20gn are deadly accurate.

I have a Savage 93R17BTV with accu-triger, bull barrel, walnut thump hole stock with bipod and Cabelas Pine Ridge 6-18 x 40 SF scope adjusts out to 300 yrds for .17grn ammo. With this ammo I have done 5 shot one hole groups @ 100yrds all day long and shot prairie dogs at 300 plus yrds easily. Excellent ammo!!

I have taken over 20 hogs ranging in size from 20 pounds to over 250 (scale weight), at ranges from 5 to 180 yards, many with exit wounds on head and neck shots. Near zero recoil makes for fast second shots. In the past 5 years I have tried many rounds for the HMR, but this is the only one I will buy. Shoots ragged 1 hole groups at 50 yards.

My son and I picked up a Savage with the heavy barrel at a gun show in town. He has been wanting one for a while and used his Christmas and B-day money to pay for it. We also picked up a box of these to sight it in and try it out. After he got it pretty much sighted in I took over and fine tuned it. I took one of the small black dots from a Shoot-n-see target and put a round right thru the center, then started aiming at the first round after that. At first I thought I was missing the dot until I walked down and checked. From 25yrds I put four more rounds thru the same hole. I think we have found the perfect round for this rifle.

One shot kill them in their tracks on Ground Hogs, out to 135 yards. Squirrels die at the crack of the gun. Found this round to be to much better on all small game!!
