Definitely worth the money and handy to have around. Like all American Tomahawk/Cold Steel hawks and machetes, if you want it sharp, you need to put your own edge on it. I highly recommend taking the set screw out unless you have lots of replacement handles laying around, especially if you want to throw it. ALL of my hawks and machetes have been thoroughly tested and abused, yet they seem to hold up.

The Trail Tomahawk is a great product for an excellent price. I got one summer 2010 and took it on a campout. Everyone there absolutely loved it. I reground the blade by hand with a sharpener to put a more aggressive edge on it and when I sharpened it I would shave hair off my arm. It is a good steel and it held an edge beautifully and never chipped hitting hard logs. The handle is nice for grip and control. But, you should tighten the hex screw in the handle when you get it or it will move up and down when you throw it. It is well balanced and not difficult to use. It really bites in and will sometimes get stuck when you really put some oomph behind it.

I acquired a Trail Hawk ...

I acquired a Trail Hawk two days ago. The head was in good shape and fit the handle tightly, but the edge needed a major sharpening; as it came it was almost flat. The handle had a large dent in the edge of the top of it and a rough gouge in the edge at the bottom of it, as well as some other smaller dents across the shaft. I got the edge sharp enough to slice paper using a 1" belt sander and a diamond sharpening rod, and I cut off the last 1/4" of the top and bottom of the handle and sanded the edges to eliminate the flaws. This resulted in no noticeable difference in length. I also sanded and stained the whole handle a dark walnut color, and I drilled two holes towards the base of the handle to aid in adding a paracord grip. The head still fits onto the handle just as tight as before. Like Joseph said - it's a great tomahawk to modify! I gave the Trail Hawk 4 stars for factory quality, but with a little effort you can definitely turn it into a 5+ star tomahawk!

Great tomahawk to modify! Handle comes generously long so you can trim it to your own ideal length. Throws great, handle is durable, and the steel keeps an edge without being brittle! Head seems loose at first, but works itself tight with use. Tomahawks are very addictive!

Nice tool,good head weight to handle mass ratio makes for accurate cuts. head is small enough to hand hold and use like an ulu type blade,not so heavy that it bounces on your pack. hammer head is no sufficiantly contured for driving nails but has enough mass for pounding stakes and the like. Wish it were blued or browned instead of painted.

This is one good, cheap tomahawk. With a straight grain American Hickory handle and a set screw on the right of head, I have tossed this hawk around a few hundred times...I haven't broke the handle yet. The steel is fairly tough and no serious chips after an accidental throw in some gravel (a few times). It is painted black, but the paint is tough and hasn't chipped much. And its not too heavy to pack...I love it.
