A drop-in cylinder allows you to fire centerfire ammunition in your blackpowder revolver. It will convert your blackpowder revolver to fire "Cowboy" ammunition. Only top grade certified steel (4150 Steel Cylinder and 4140 Steel Top Plate) is used in the production of these cylinders to offer superior quality, strength and safety. Due to manufacturing variations in revolvers, some minor fitting may be required. No FFL required to purchase. Not for use in brass frame revolvers. Not available in all areas.

Installation
The conversion cylinder has a plate at the rear of the cylinder body that contains the firing pins. The plate is removed by lifting it off the cylinder body. There is an indexing pin in the body so that the firing pins align properly with the chambers in the cylinder. Removing the plate allows access to the chambers in the cylinder body. Load the chambers with the specified caliber of ammunition. Replace the plate. Remove the original cylinder from the blackpowder handgun and replace that cylinder with the conversion cylinder. After firing, the conversion cylinder must be removed and the plate lifted off so that the empty brass can be removed with a rod or other suitable object (not included with the cylinder).

Note: This conversion cylinder is for BLACK POWDER cartridges or black powder equivalent cartridges (also called Cowboy Ammunition) with lead bullets on a steel frame revolver ONLY. Attempting to use modern ammunition and/or installation on a brass frame will create a dangerous condition that can result in injury or death. Dry firing with the conversion installed will damage the firing pins.

The product is 100 % quality in fit, finish and materials. The cylinder fits my Ruger Old Army like it came from the factory. I have had more fun with this product since I got it. No more pour and crunch with the loose powder and bullets. Just pop the cylinder apart and drop in six 45 long colt cowboy loads. I will have to say I prefer my own reloads using 30 grains of pyrodex and a 250 grain maxi hunter bullett from T&C to the factory cowboy loads.

I really like the ...

I really like the quality, the finish and everything else about this cylinder except for the safety perspective.I took my son to the range yesterday and I brought my Ruger Old Army with the 45 colt conversion cylinder to shoot too. I loaded the cylinder with 45 colts and while I was sitting it in the frame of the revolver one round WENT OFF....boooommmmm!!!!!!!! Right in my hands. Nobody got hurt. The bullet hit the top of the bench, broke my ammo box in two and fell on the ground by my son's feet. I am guessing while I was sitting the cylinder in I hit the firing pin (each chamber has one) on the frame and the gun shot, not even through the barrel.As much as I like this product I will have to give it only 1 star due to it not being a very safe piece of equipment.

When I read some of the ...

When I read some of the reviews, and about how the cylinder might not fit, I was a bit hesitant to buy one, but decided to go ahead, and worst case I would have to send it in with my ROA to be fitted. Well, I guess it was my lucky day! The cylinder I got fit without a problem. It's .002 longer than my factory cylinder so it's a nice snug fit, but it goes in and comes out without a problem! This is the first time I'm writing a review, as I never thought it necessary before, but with so many folks saying bad things about these cylinders I thought I would let people know that there's a good chance that your cylinder will drop right in. The only thing I would have liked to see (and I don't see why it couldn't be done) would be to have the safety notches like the factory cylinder has. That would really make this a must have item! They say to keep your loads on the light side (cowboy loads), and with the length limitations of the cylinder that's about all you can do! I have some 200gr LRNFP cartridges from Apogee, and they fit the length perfectly! They say not to use handloads, but they HAVE to say that, just like every other gun company does as well, their lawyers make them say that! My ROA is an older one made in 1977 and the finish on the cylinder matches it perfectly, but I think it wouldn't look out of place on the newer highly polished ROAs as well, and if you want, you could always polish it up some more to match. I understand that this conversion unit is similar to conversions made back in the 1870s so it's right at home on a ROA, based on an older design, but not an exact copy of any one design! In the words of an OLD TV commercial "Try it, you'll like it!"

Apparently from reading the other reviews I fell into the fortunate 80 percent who received a true "drop in" cylinder. I read all reviews prior to purchase and accepted the fact that it might need to be fitted, however mine dropped right in and worked flawlessly. I am extremely pleased with the fit and finish as well....it matches my Stainless Ruger Old Army perfectly. Based on my experience I would not hesitate to purchase another one.

In this day and age, it's hard to get a product that lives up to the manufacturer's claims. I was leery of the "drop-in" conversion due to the reviews that said it was too long to fit. The cylinder I received dropped right in, rotated properly and shot like a dream in my Old Army. The cylinder must be indexed properly since my 5-shot offhand group from 20 yards measured 2". That is MUCH better than I was able to obtain with cast minies and 4F black powder. The finish of the cylinder is better than on the pistol itself. Everything about this product is FIRST CLASS. I wish I could rate it 7 stars; it's that good.

It would have been Five ...

It would have been Five Stars the way round with the only exception being I was in the 20% need to fit group. I bought two cylinders for my pair of Old Armies and both had to be fitted as both were too long. Three thousandths on the one and five on the other. Not much but enough to keep it from working. Once trimmed up on the lathe (breech side only) both cylinders had respectable .07 barrel/cylinder gaps and locked up tight with proper indexing. Out to the range this was proved out with my 300 gr. load and point of aim out to 25 yards. The remaining overall fit and finish was perfectly mated to my Old Armies and looked as if they came from the factory that way. I shoot Frontier Cartridge in SASS with this pair and they haven't let me down.

The finish of the ...

The finish of the unfluted cylinder is good and matches my gun well but it was too long to fit my gun. I called the phone number on the written material that came with the cylinder and the nice lady that answered the phone said to ship it to them (Howell's Old West Coversions) along with a resonable fee for the work and return shipping and my gun and they would fit it. Cost me additional money shipping and insurance to get the gun and cylinder to them. Howell's turn around time was 2-3 days. Tried the item out today and it functions and shoots VERY well. I need to make major sight adjustments going from cap and ball to metalic cartridges but accuracy is very good and ease of use of this conversion cylinder sure beats cap and ball and the clean up afterwards. The cylinder is a fun addition. I'd recommend it to others, just be prepared to possibly pay extra to get it fit and realize major sight adjustments will have to me made.

It gives great versatility to the Ruger Old Army Revolver. Cylinder length limits the overall length of cartridges, but only light rounds are recommended anyway. Accuracy is as good as cap and ball loads without the mess!

I've wanted one of these ...

I've wanted one of these since they came out. Not very good for fast reloads, but quicker than C & B; and if you use smokeless, easier to clean. I shoot the Old Army a lot more now. I should have purchased a long time ago. Buy the new base pin at the same time!

Fit and finish are ...

Fit and finish are excellent. Directions for use are understandable and easy to follow. You can load six rounds as conversion has safety notches similar to original. Accuracy is improved due to more consistant loads.
