Product Information

Varmint Grenade bullets feature a frangible copper/tin composite core. They are accurate bullets that can be driven at the highest velocities without coming apart, yet fragments explosively upon impact. Based on a design developed for military applications, Barnes realized that these bullets were perfect for squirrels and prairie dog hunting, but that they also were ideal for larger animals because they created little or no exit wound leaving the pelt virtually undamaged.

The name Barnes picked out for the little 36gr Varmint bullet is perfect. It is exciting to see how quickly these little bullet expand on something as small as a chuck or crow, but from the tests I've done with them, I would say with no doubt that they would do the same to a coyote or fox this side of 200yds. You can push these little buggers fast too, faster than some other varmint bullets, that if pushed too fast they don't make it 30yds before they come apart. They will also punch one-holed groups at 100yds all day long. Past 200 yard, they like any bullet this light, in gusting wind, they do get pushed around easy but still are better in the wind than the SPSX, but this is because of the better BC. In my guns these VG's liked Benchmark, Varget and such powders. I would purchase again.

No luck at all with these out of a .22-250 that shoots 3/8" groups w/V-Max's and Dogtown's. Tried 3 different loads with 4 different powders (all out of #4 manual) and the best I could do is 1.5"+. Would get 2 touching and a flyer an inch out. Weighed a batch of 10 and found a +/- .8 grain variation. Asked Barnes about this and was told they don't make these by weight because of the composite core. Explains a lot. I'll stick w/Hornady, Berger, and Midway Dogtown.

I am disappointed in the ...

I am disappointed in the weight consistency. Of 25 bullets weighed I got a variation between - 4Grn to +3Grn from the 36Grn desired. This is roughly a 16 % variation. I found the Hornady V-Max 40 Grn to be +- 1.0 Grn variation. I want to use Barnes because of the lead free feature. I am shooting a Brownng A-Bolt with Alliant 10X powder and my best group is 1" at 100Yds.

FOLLOW UP I shot one ...

FOLLOW UP I shot one stunning group early in testing for AR platforms in .223 Rem, bought a bunch more, and could not replicate the good group with any of the 3 different lot numbers I had. They would all shoot 3/4 to an slightly over an inch, but each lot had a different sweet spot. This bullet will tune, but it gets complicated.

I like the idea of these ...

I like the idea of these bullets. They can go really fast out of my .22-250 (4200+ fps) but the faster they go the worse they shoot. They weren't any better in my .223, either. At the upper velocity range in both rifles they spread all over the target. I weighed a bunch and found huge variations. I'll stay with 50 grain V-max in the .223 and the .22-250 prefers any 55 grainer.

Great bullet. Plenty ...

Great bullet. Plenty accurate, and does a number on prairie dogs, and surprisingly effective on coyotes. I use these to hunt in lead-free areas. I gave them 4 stars only because the 40 grain V-max has better long range accuracy in my rifle.

Good for close shots, but ...

Good for close shots, but the disadvantages of copper (vs. lead) really start to show when you are doubling or tripling rimfire distances. As you reach out there these bullets will become less of a grenade and will struggle in the wind.

I reload for every rifle ...

I reload for every rifle I own and even for other people and I have switched them all to the Triple Shock but the only rifles that didn't like them was my 22-250's. So tried the 36gr. Varmint Grenade with H335 and now I shoot groups under 3/8". They are a great bullet for woodchucks, foxes, and coyotes as long as you make a ethical shoot even at longer ranges.

I tried the 36gn Varmint ...

I tried the 36gn Varmint Grenade this last summer on Prairie Dogs in Montana. They were everything I had expected of them. They Chronographed @ 3735 FPS in my Rem model 700, and grouped @ .262" at 100 yards. We hunted Prairie Dogs for (3) days and the performance was very good, even with a slight breeze, we were able to hit the mark out to 400-500 yards now and then. I have also been out shooting gophers in the last week and what I really like about these bullets is the fact that there is no chance of a ricochet, and no trace of lead left in the field when you are done. I should also mention that there were (3) of use using them, and altogether we burned up around 1000 rounds.

These little bullets are ...

These little bullets are simply awe inspiring in my 22-250. Loaded with data found on Barnes' site and I am very satisfied. Started with minimum load and carefully worked up to maximum with groups shrinking as I went. Used Blc-2 and seated them .020" off the lands, I am getting 4358 fps avg 15' from muzzle, very low deviation and shot a .249" center to center 5 shot group @ 100 yds. Performance on various critters is astounding! Get a c.o.a.l. gauge, play with seating depth a little and I believe you too will be impressed.
