Product Information

Varmint Grenade bullets feature a frangible copper/tin composite core. They are accurate bullets that can be driven at the highest velocities without coming apart, yet fragments explosively upon impact. Perfect for squirrels and prairie dog hunting, but also creates little or no exit wound on larger animals leaving their pelts virtually undamaged.

Shooting the Barnes VG ...

Shooting the Barnes VG bullet in my TC Encore. Have had good accuracy with IMR4198 shot 9 coyotes last winter all with good results not for the coyotes though. Bullets performed as advertised only one had a small exit wound and most when I skin them had copper fragments. Hence varmint grenade I guess. If you are trying to save the pelts to sell these are a great choice and not much tracking. Only 2 made it about 15-20 yds. the rest all dropped in their tracks. Thanks Barnes for a great varmint bullet. Porcupines, woodchucks & crows don't like them much either.

The product is very uniform in weight and diameter. But at this time I have not been able to get acceptable acuracy. More testing to follow.

5 of 5 for both accuracy and explosiveness. I shoot a 1 in 12 Kimber .204 ruger and they stabilize just fine, 3 shot groups easily coverable with a dime. Even at a modest 3750 (for the bullet weight and cartridge) they demolish whatever small critter they come in contact with. Shooting targets, you will find the jackets laying behind whatever you staple it to.

4300 FPS in my CZ 527 ...

4300 FPS in my CZ 527 varmint gun with H4895, or IMR4198 for 3880 fps, both VERY Accurate, COL is better at 2.250 but also tried 2.260 with no real change in accuracy. Did not "explode" as advertised on squirrels. The Hornady 38gn poly tip was much more destructive, to see pictures of ground squirrels taken with 204 Ruger check out www.youtube.com under "fun with squirrels" key words 204 Ruger / 17 HMR, you will note the diff. rounds. CA Lead free so no more choice but Barnes, Excellent product.

They would have five ...

They would have five stars but some rattle do to chipping of the composite core, which leads to lots of fliers!. They are long for the weight, about as long as the 39's and 40's so some rifles might not like them. My CZ will put five into 1/2 inch at 100 IF I shake each one and save the rattlers for fire forming wildcats. I've only shot five or six ground squirrels with them, and so far they don't have the toss and lob factor the 32's and 40's do although they are humane and put them down quick. Happy hunting! Aric

I have worked up several ...

I have worked up several loads for my Ruger M77 MKIIVT in 204 Ruger and found these bullets to be consistently very accurate (1/2 inch@ 100yds.) and I'm not a world class benchrest shooter. They have been devastating on crows and rats and I would highly recommend these bullets to any dedicated varmint hunter.

Don't let anyone tell you ...

Don't let anyone tell you that these bullets are not accurate. With a custom 700 Remington in .204 Ruger, they will consistently group .2 MOA or better in a no wind condition, but you do have to pay attention to Barnes recommendation of seating the bullets well off the lands. My best accuracy is achieved by seating the Grenades .020 to .030 off the lands, and groups for reasons unknown to me actually open up somewhat as I get closer to touching the lands, so for potential accuracy, the bullet gets five stars. For explosiveness, they have to be pushed to maximum velocity (and I mean well over 4000 FPS-don't try this with your 20 Tactical) to make the ground squirrels that we shoot in California morph into the anatomical starbursts that us varmint hunters like to see. The Grenades simply do not perform as well explosively as the poly-tipped lead bullets from Sierra, Hornady, or Nosler, but since the liberals have succeeded in taking away our lead in the Golden State, I have no choice but to shoot the new eco-friendly bullets, regardless of how they perform, so for frangibility, they get a three.
