Product Information

Varmint Grenade bullets feature a frangible copper/tin composite core. They are accurate bullets that can be driven at the highest velocities without coming apart, yet fragments explosively upon impact. Perfect for squirrels and prairie dog hunting, but also creates little or no exit wound on larger animals leaving their pelts virtually undamaged.

Effective July 1, 2008, we are required to use lead free bullets for varmints in our part of Calif. Loaded the 62 gr. Varmint Grenade in my .243 and 6mm sporters. 243 grouped @ .845 and 6mm @ .540 for 5 shots. I've killed 6 coyotes with 243; all instant one shot kills at 100-250+ yards incl running. Broadside shots exit while going away shots don't. Will use this bullet for upcoming Wyoming prairie dog shoot.

I was not impressed with ...

I was not impressed with these bullets. They are inconsistent in weight and ogive. Only 15 out of 100 were the same weight and ogives were all over the scale. The Barnes rep responded by saying they are "good shooters" despite their variation and inconsistencies. I would have to disagree. After testing all 200 bullets the smallest group attained was 7/8" at 100 yards with IMR-4350. I was NOT able to repeat that group in my testing. The same load consistently gave 1.25"-1.75" groups. I used the .243 in 62 grain in my rifle that gives me 1/2" 100 yd groups with Sierra 70 gr. BlitzKing, 1-10" twist barrel.

These are devastating on ...

These are devastating on varmints. However those who like to play the long game as I do, this is not the bullet to load. I went from covering a 5 round group with a dime at 100 yards to an 1 1/4" group at best. I will go back to my Hornady 58 V-Max.

I shoot these out of a ...

I shoot these out of a 1-8 twist .243 and sometimes they shoot under 1" at 200 yards. As these have a rather wide hollow point & flat base they don't seem to do as well beyond 300 yards as other 6mm bullets. I suggested to Barnes that they put a plastic tip and a boat tail on the 62 g VG and was told that this was a great idea but nothing has happened yet. As expected they obliterate small varmints.

I use these in my Remington with Varget, and they are great if you can shoot prairie dogs on a day with no wind! I get just over a quarter in. group at 100yds. The only negative is the BC. Thumbs up!

As reported by another writer, these will not stabilize in a Sako 1-14" barrel (6mm PPC). Barnes did include info with bullets stating the need for a 10 twist or faster. They are so right. I ordered online and there was no such "warning" on the site I ordered from (not directly from Barnes). I ended up trying out in a Ruger .243 varmint rifle that would only previously shoot a particular 85 grn. bullet. This Barnes bullet is the best unleaded I have tried for the .243 yet - but not close to the Speer 85 grn. lead. Because of the huge variances in length, weight and meplats, I ordered a meplat trimmer and will sort these by weight. I am sure they will shoot better, as I am shocked they shoot as well as they do, given the huge variances.

1 1/2" groups at 200yds ...

1 1/2" groups at 200yds out of my Remington R25 1-10 twist sitting on H414 at 3673 fps but a 3rd of the bullets were found with the compressed tin and copper still fully intact the other 2/3rds were totally gone no jacket no core found.

Loaded these up with H414 ...

Loaded these up with H414 minimum load and shot 1 1/2" groups at 200yds out of my Remington R25 1-10" twist how ever 1/3rd of bullets recovered the core was still fully intact other2/3rds were fine totally gone.

Being a resident of CA., and a varmint hunter in a lead-free zone, makes this bullet a must. There are other lead-free bullets, but this one's more accurate, and more terminal over the 150 yard mark than 223 non-lead bullets so,...SEARCH OVER.

These .243" dia. bullets ...

These .243" dia. bullets are light for their length, .972" nominal length for 62 grains. The Miller twist formula for determining a bullet's stability factor indicates that with velocities between 3,000 and 3,500 fps the 1:14, and 1:12 twist rates are insufficient to stabilize them. The 1:10 twist is marginal depending on the cartridge. This has been born out by my experience where a Sako L461 in 6mm PPC USA would not hit the target at 100 yards, with the bullets tumbling in flight. A 1:10 barrel in the same cartridge with a custom throat to allow seating out into the neck, provided fair to good accuracy, but with inconsistent performance. The 1:10 barrel had a Miller Stability Factor of 1.19 @3,000 fps where the ideal should be between 1.3 to 2.0.1:9 twist seems to be the best overall compromise.I have ordered a 1:8 twist barrel in a larger cartridge to retest these bullets. If you are stuck in the lead free area, a bit of experimenting is necessary. These bullets are quite spectacular on varmints, they just require a bit faster twist than lead bullets.
