Varmint Grenade bullets feature a frangible copper/tin composite core. They are accurate bullets that can be driven at the highest velocities without coming apart, yet fragments explosively upon impact. Perfect for squirrels and prairie dog hunting, but also creates little or no exit wound on larger animals leaving their pelts virtually undamaged.

I haven't had any issues with the VG not fragmenting - in fact the opposite. I have used these in .243 and .224 and have had them disintegrate upon hitting a wet leaf hanging from a tree. Thinking this was kind of funny, we turned one coyote hunting trip into a "watch VGs blast apart on tree leaves" trip. The only real issue I've had with these is inconsistent accuracy. You really need to sight in every batch you buy, and the best I've ever been able to achieve with VGs is 1 1/4" groups at 100 yards. Some people claim better, but I haven't been able to get it out of my stock Remington 700s in .223 and .243.Other than that, its a fun round to shoot and extremely reasonably priced compared to some other premium bullets.

IMPORTANT!!!!! QUICK TWIST ONLY. The box states for 1:10 twist or faster. It comes out of my Remmy 222 sideways. Groups from a Remmy Varminter is 12" at 50 yds and crooked holes. I would check my twist before ordering these. They do go to dust on any kind of impact including a blade of grass. There is not going to be much penetration on these so limit the size of the animal to coyote or smaller. Very explosive bullet!

I do a lot of reloading. This is the bullet I use when hunting around cattle.
This bullet is a good choice because it will fragment apart when it hits intended target. Like varmint. I don't have to worry about a missed shot ricochet off something and injuring anything else.

I have loaded over a 1000 rounds using Barnes Varmint Grenades for our 223's. We shoot AR15's with Les Baer uppers, these loads are deadly on the ground squirrels. So far my longest take was 508 yards, the squirrel never knew what hit it. I would recommend this bullet to any serious varmint hunter. We have taken many coyotes with this same round, its up to you to make the shot placement.

Will not buy any more of these. The penetration was akin to FMJ. Got better expansion from my Dog Towns. Total waste of my time and money.

Just returned from Wyoming. I used the 50 gr. Varmint Grenade through my Rock River 24" varmint with Varget. These are the nastiest little bullets out there. totally satisfied. Thank you Barnes, and thank you Midway for your great customer service.

.350" grps and smaller at 100yds over IMR4198 with 1-12" twist 24"bbl .223rem seat them close to (not against) the lands 3400fps and no exit on coyotes at 200yds what more can you ask for. I get an occasional flyer but Im sure thats not due to the guy pullin the trigger.

Update from my 3/10/11 review. Used on ground squirrels yesterday, from 25 to 415 yards. Started at 3400 fps, I got good explosive results at the closer distances, which dropped off past 200 yards. Broadside shots with little resistance punched quarter size exits past 200 yards. Through the shoulders or a lengthwise shot gave more rapid expansion. Does not have the explosiveness as many conventional hollow points, yet is very accurate in my rifle. Out to 300 yards there were very few misses, past that the wind had more of a say in where the bullet landed. If you have to shoot non-lead in a condor zone, this will work. If you don't have to shoot non-lead, conventional hp will give you more of the "flip up in the air" results when shooting squirrels.

For accuracy this can't be beat - at 100 yards easily within one hole and at 200 yards we were shooting bottle caps and certainly keeping it within a quarter sized group all day long with a Rem 700 in 223. HOWEVER; for varmint hunting we have real problems. Friends had told us that they were hitting coyotes and going straight through unless they made a shoulder or head shot. So, we set a few plastic bottles of water out there and punched right through with no expansion, shot some 1"X2" furring strips again; with no expansion. It wasn't until we put the furring strips in front of the bottles of water that we got that "explosive" expansion that Barnes touts. Really disappointing considering we have to shoot the "no-lead" in this area.

I have shot several of these bullets and had great results. On paper with my savage 22-250 it will shoot 1/2 inch groups no problem using IMR 3031 powder. Shot prairie dogs out to 400 yards, again not a problem. Shot better than 90% most days. Also use for home defense in my 223. 3/4 in group at 100 yards. I uses IMR 4198 powder. One of the best bullets for what they are made for

Shot pretty well with my DPMS 16 inch upper. .3" was the best I got at a hundred yards. I had to keep the velocity under 3000 fps or they flew extremely inconsistent and a couple tumbled. I havent shot any groundhogs yet but it completely destroyed a water bottle.
