The Lee Universal Decapping and Depriming Die is made of steel and allows the reloader to take cases directly from the range and decap them without the need of lube or cleaning. The Decapper is guaranteed unbreakable by Lee and even removes crimped in primers and accepts cases up to .550 in diameter. Shellholders sold separately. Comes in a plastic case. While this is listed as a Universal die, it is not recommended for use with 17 or 20 caliber cases.

Excellent decapper. Will not dirty since it does not size. Cheap and convenient since I decap before I clean my cases. I removed the decapping pin on my sizing die so I can use primed brass. For old cases, priming is done with the Auto Prime II on my separate turret. When I load onto the 3 hole turret, I can use the auto index to produce rounds continuously w/o removing the shell from the holder - size, flare/charge, bullet seat/crimp. Pretty convenient!

Easy to use, but have to make sure it lines up w/ case neck first.Used it on .308 with no problems.I used it for .223, did fine for about 100 rounds of Winchester cartridges. Then started doing a box of Federal, and the pin stuck in a flash hole. Got it out, seemed to force fit back into the larger pin holder okay, but pulled out 3 cartridges later. Gave up on it. I'll try another before going to a different brand.

Most used die I have

This is undoubtedly the most frequently used die I own. When I return from the range, the first step in my reloading procedure, after sorting and removing mud or sand from cases I plan to reload, is to decap them. I then clean the primer pockets and put the brass into the tumbler. After that, my procedure is pretty much standard.

I have purchased a spare pin for the die, that I haven't needed yet. But then, I probably haven't used it to decap more than four or five thousand cases to date. The only case I have found that it can't handle is the .50 BMG, and my press can't handle that either. I have encountered a few cases with off center flash holes that would have broken the pins of most sizing/decapping dies, but only made me reset the pin in the Lee die.

Just because it's cheap......

I bought this so I wouldn't crud up my progressive press. It decaps everything I feed it and I have yet to have a problem.
I bought two extra decapping rods and have yet had to use them after decapping over 3,000 rounds of various calibers.
This is a solid product!

I now use this die to decap all of my fired brass. You do not have to clean the brass first,nor do you have to use any kind of lube. Decapping before tumbling helps clean the primer pocket. I HIGHLY recommend this die to everyone!!

As a begginer for reloading, I scoured the net, did vast ammount of research, and read endless forums on the subject of dies. I decided to give it a go, and for the price who can complain?

Despite some negative comments, I found the die to be very well made and nothing to complain about or find anything negative about it. The die worked far better than I could have imagined.

I even ordered extra depriming rods, for fear I would break one, and it never happened. My very first go, I deprimed hundreds of 5.56 crimped primers, and only had 3 ornery crimped primers cause the fail safe priming rod to pop up. Tighten it back up, and re-stroke. There was never any idication of any stress or weakness on the rod what so ever.

The rod itself is very strong, and held up exceeding my expectations. I went through crimped primers, almost to the point I couldn't tell they were crimmped. The confidence in using this die makes this one not only a great buy, but highly recommended.

Read the negative reviews...Cheap aluminum...keeps breaking pins...stripped threads and rounded off the nut. Really?? I guess some people can break anything. This is a great tool and thanks to Lee for making it inexpensive and tough enough to do what it's supposed to. Ok, you want steel so when you hit it with a hammer it won't ding as bad? Add 20 bucks to the price and it will still do the same job. If you read the instructions first and take it apart and understand how it works, you won't have any problems and it will work flawlessly. I always decap first, then clean my brass. I remove the pins from all my other sizing dies. If you have this die set properly, the pin will push up if it encounters a tough primer to unseat. Loosen up the lock nut (with the right box wrench), tap the pin back down and snug it up a little tighter. If it still pushes up, then segregate that case to be deprimed with a sizing die. You won't find many like this. I've decapped thousands and still have the original pin. But yes, I have a spare pin just in case I get stupid.

Broke on third case

The "unbreakable" de-capping pin broke on the third case I tried to de-cap. Lee sent another pin/shaft assembly. This one broke on the 62nd case I tried to de-cap with it. I checked each case that broke a pin (to see if it might be Berdan primed, they were not; just crimped-in primers). Lee sent another pin/shaft assembly, and the customer service rep. suggested using a Lee resizing die to de-cap the brass, as it is built stronger. While waiting for the parts from Lee, I ordered 2 additional pin/shaft assemblies from Midway. When it all came in, I installed one of the parts I ordered from Midway. This one would actually move up in the collet if it encountered much resistance. It did so every time I used it on a crimped-in primer. In the process of trying to get the shaft to hold in the collet, I discovered that the alloy Lee used in the die, and collet, was made of soft steel. The collet and die tried to "round-off" using an adjustable wrench. I measured the shafts with a digital caliper, and found them to be different by as much as .002"! I ordered another brand of de-capper from Midway, and so far it has de-capped over 2000 pieces of mixed .223 Rem. brass with no problems. I like (and own) several Lee products, but I am getting away from their dies. I gave this product 2 stars for the great customer service from Lee, and Midway. I just hope I have no other problems from any of the other Lee products I have purchased recently.

Sometimes (depending on what I am loading,) I like to deprime them all first. so I can trim, and clean before loading. Has worked perfectly on all my cases, including crimped .223 cases.
