The Hornady Lock-N-Load Black Powder Measure is the ultimate powder measure for the black powder reloader. The Lock-N-Load Black Powder Measure is designed specifically to meet the safety needs of reloaders working with Black Powder, with its non-sparking aluminum hopper and brass metering unit that prevent static electricity build-up. The measure has extremely tight tolerances between the frame and drum to prevent binding and increase smooth operation. Mounting plate included. Stand is sold separately.

Overall, this is a good ...

Overall, this is a good measure, and I do really like it- it is consistently thrown charges and works very well. I have never had a bound cylinder from powder getting into it, but then I typically use FFFg instead of larger granulations- which may or may not have to do with it. The negatives things about it- the pin that holds the measure part in the cylinder popped right out the other side of the cylinder the first time I tried to remove the measure part. Hornady also doesn't have a schematic or parts list for this measure. Lastly, the drop tube that is available from Hornady for this piece is very short as compared to any other drop tube.

I have been using it for about a year. Over all I am satisfied. It has bound/locked up on me 2 or three times to the point where I had to knock out the revolving drum with a hammer and reassemble before it would work again. It seems that while I am using it, the charge I am pouring start to increase and I have to readjust downward. I have never figured out why it binds up or why the charge changes. I just check every tenth charge to insure it is still operating correctly.

Like all Hornady products, this measure is great. Very fine fit and finish. There are, however, several things you should know about this measure before buying it. First, it is for black powder only--it's not good with the smokeless powderI tried. Second, even though it is a lock and load measure, there are no powder inserts available for it like the other "smokeless" lock and load measure Hornady makes. (makes you wonder why they made it a lock and load measure). The steel inserts made for their "smokeless" lock and load measure will not work with the black powder measure. And third, there are no extended drop tubes available for this measure. I called Hornady and asked them if they intended to come out with powder inserts for the lock and load feature and extended drop tubes for this measure and they said they were not planning to. The Lyman black powder measure (Midway sells it too) can be used with both smokeless and black powder. It also comes with extended drop tubes so you can load black powder directly into cartridges. The extended drop tubes Lyman makes will not fit on the Hornady measure. Look at both before you buy. I think the biggest advantage of this measure is the sold brass powder rotor and measuring tube.
