Product Information

Ammonia-free cleaner that was developed to clean copper fouling without harming any other metal in the bore. Water-based so there is no need to neutralize rush through the cleaning process like with ammonia based cleaners. Contains no synthetic ingredients. Field tested on howitzers and other large bore guns with outstanding results.

The KG family of cleaning products are meant to be used as a system.

KG-1 for removal of powder and lead fouling.
KG-2 for removal of copper and lead fouling, also works well for polishing bore (1200-1400 grit).
KG-12 for aggressive removal of copper fouling.
KG-3 solvent and degreaser for removing fouling loosened by KG-1, KG-2 and KG-12.
KG-4 gun oil for protecting metal that has been cleaned and degreased with KG-3. Meets military specification Mil-L-63460 D.

In the past I had settled on Butch's BoreShine (having gone through Hoppe's Special, Shooter's Choice Copper Remover, Sweet's, Montana Extreem Copper Remover, MPro7 copper remover, multiple "copper-cleaning" foam cleaners, etc). An application of Butch's *always* came out indicating heavy blue after using these other cleaners.Used alone (or after using MPro-7 powder solvent to get the regular fouling out), Butch's would come out *incredibly" blue, royal blue to the point that nearby shooters would go "Wow!" and ask how it was shooting with all that copper fouling. I'd show them the target in which it would inevitably hold a 99-100 6-8X off the bench even with Greek ammo. So Butch's was really finding what in other gun's would be a "so-what?" level of copper fouling.But even with Butch's it would take 4-5 applications/soakings/scrubbings to get all the color out.So after 20 rounds yesterday I just put one Butch's patch down the bore and cleaned up w/ Breakfree so as to deliberately leave copper. And today the KG-12 arrived in the mail.I hauled the Garand out and ran a sloppy patch's-worth of KG-12 (water-based/no smell) to wet the bore, then used the same patch to scrub maybe 15-20 seconds,... and let it sit for 8-9 minutes. Dry patch/scrub-out and then a sloppy patch of Butch's to test the results with a 15-minute soak.No color, nada, nunka, not a thing .where normally Butch's would still be sky blue. I'm sold.

If you own a Remington 700 XCR-II coated with matte black TriNyte do not leave KG-12 on for any extended period of time. It will take the coating off your rifle. I have pictures and the rifle to prove it. KG-12 is very aggressive.

Aggressive on Copper. Gentle on barrels

Removed years of copper build-up on a 1914 Spanish Mauser. Tried repeated Sweets, but kept getting blue indication of copper. Then tried KG-12. After cleaning with KG-1, soaked a nylon brush with KG-12 and scrubbed. Waited 5 minutes. Got lots of Brown color on patches. Gave it another nylon brush scrubbing and soak. Then cleaned with patches. A test patch with Sweet's then showed no blue at all. Worked great on a 338 WM copper hound, too. The KG-12 quickly removed copper residues left by Wipe-Out copper solvent. It's so gentle on barrel steel that there's no limit on the time it can remain in the barrel.

Works differently than others

I have a 243 that copper fouls and have tried Sweets, Butchs and several other products including 10% industrial strength ammonia from Ace hardware. I have spent HOURS and numerous patches in frustration trying to get the copper out. I decided to try KG-12 and was suprised that the patches were not blue but SOMETHING was coming out and after about 15 minutes nothing. I then tried some ammonia just to see and surprise, surprise no copper! Hope it works as well for you as it does for me.

This stuff works I suppose, not doubting that, but a test after a cleaning with Bore Tech Eliminator showed not a hint of blue. Not even a hue of blue on the patch. Bore Tech wins and it does all fouling, so no need to clean twice...

Do not look for blue on your patches! Copper will come out as...the color of copper. When a patch comes out the same color as it went in you're done. I start with KG-1 to remove all the powder/carbon fouling then move to KG-12. Run a wet patch, let sit 15 mins, then dry patch to check for copper. Use a bore snake to quickly dry the bore and repeat. Labor unintensive but can take some time depending on how bad the fouling is. No need to brush really, but if you feel the need make sure to use a nylon brush- brass will give false positives.

Did its job well, I let it sit for 15 minutes and then wiped it out. I did a test and used sweets to see if it got all the copper and sure enough no blue on the patch. Now hopefully I got my sub moa accuracy back :)

If blue on the patch is still the indicator of dissolved copper then K-12 is not impressive. I don't know what it really does but there is no traditional evidence of any copper removal. However, K-1 does a great job of copper removal. Four or five passes with the patch (after swabbing the bore with K-1) produces lighter and lighter blue until finished. Not impressed with K-12...am impressed with K-1.

You've probably seen the web sites with copper removing experiments comparing KG-12 and other copper removers. They come to the conclusion that KG-12 is the best out there and some popular 'copper removers' really don't remove much copper.Even though I realize everything you read on the web is certifiably true, I did the experiment myself.I compared 2 other of the most popular copper removers to KG-12. I weighed and placed 3 6mm bullets in small containers and barely covered them with the solvents. I let them sit 24 hours and reweighed them. The other 2 popular solvents hadn't removed enough copper to register on my scale. The KG-12 bullet lost about 3% of it's weight. It was also apparent the KG-12 started etching the bullet immediately, while the other 2 bullets remained shiny until the next day.It also doesn't have that ammonia smell. It smells more like an NYC cab driver. Offensive, but not nearly as bad as ammonia.

I'm a believer. I have a .280 that fouls like no other. Used Butch's, Sweet's and Remington products with visible copper still remaining at the muzzle. I decided to try KG12. I received it from MidwayUSA and in 5 minutes, ALL remaining copper was removed. No soaking and waiting. I soaked a patch then followed with soaked nylon brush. I was pretty impressed.

If you have a Remington XCR with the Trinite finish, do not leave this on very long. It will attack and take the trinite finish off in short order. My 308 is living proof!
