I have had this one and the smaller one for a few years now and have used the two of them for so many things it boggles the mind. They are coated with a very thin coat of sealant but it doesn't make a bit of difference as it doesn't mar a surface either and with use, disappears from the ends completely. The sealant doesn't flake off or leave residue as it is worn off either so I have found it to be a non-issue. The Hammers themselves are extremely useful. Not only are they used when you don't want to mar a surface but you can also use them when a spark s unwanted as well. Unlike a rubber hammer, these don't rebound from the hit so they work well whenever you want to make a sure, dead on strike that will not spark or mar a surface. Best spent money on a hammer, ever.

The "rawhide" mallet is sealed with a hard plastic finish and is not suitable for use as received. No instructions. I would use a rasp to remove the plastic from the ends, but that might destroy the mallet.
