The Caldwell Lead Sled DFT Rifle Shooting Rest offers a dramatic upgrade to the original Lead Sled. Dual Frame Technology (DFT) provides increased stability and allows 22" of front to back adjustment to accommodate any long gun. It utilizes the same windage and elevation adjustment system as the Caldwell Rock BR Competition Rifle Front Shooting Rest, making adjustments extremely fine and consistent. Padded front and rear cradles protect your firearm and rubber tipped feet offer no-skid support on any surface.

Installing the rear pad/cover on the rest:

The cover is shipped as a square shape, since it's not folded to fit the rest. Sit the cover on a flat surface so that "Caldwell Lead Sled" is readable and is at the lower left. On the right edge of the pad there is a strip covering some Velcro material and there is an opening at the top right corner of the cover. Place one hand inside the cover and grasp the top of that Velcro strip and pull it into the opening. Keep working that part down until the Velcro strip is horizontal. What needs to happen is that the Velcro strip and the top part of the cover that's covered with black vinyl will flip inside the green nylon portion of the pad.

The original top right corner of the cover should now be the bottom of the "pocket" for the rifle's buttstock.

At this point, the cover may be slipped down over the steel back part of the rest, and the cover is then held in place by the Velcro straps at the bottom.

I did a review when I ...

I did a review when I first got the sled. Since, I've used it several times.I still give it the top rating - steady, rugged,accurate,easily adjustable,& probably durable.Nothing is perfect--I've found out a few things to pass along:1). It shoots better adjusting for rifle stock length. It may be best to adjust the front rest to mimic where the shooter naturally holds it - I'm not 100% sure on the best position. 2). The frame height requires a correspondingly higher seat for the shooter.3). 2 bags rather than 1 bag of shot are better for stability and minimze adjustments between shots.4). The rear pad ripped where it came between my shoulder & the metal---the company is sending a replacement. 2 bags of shot might have prevented the failure by additional recoil elimination.I appreciate the suggestions of the other reviewers. I hope this helps others as well.E

Used for the first time ...

Used for the first time with mixed results. MINUSES: 1. Some sloppiness in the front rest due to how the post fits in the unit; discovered it could be helped by tightening adjustment wheel in addition to the set handle. Also discovered afterwards the screw holding the cradle to the post was loose; used lock-tite to cure this. 2. Extra height the gun is above the table was hard for my son to adapt to. 3. Front bag was too narrow for the gun we were using. 4. Rear stock holder has some space; intend to add thin foam. PLUSES: 1. Overall stability of the unit. 2. Sliding front rest.I think I will like it more as I get used to it; will add some weight to it next time. I also aggravated any minuses by using a less than stable folding bench. If the front post/rest could be improved (considering the cost) and the height of the unit lowered, it would deserve more than 3 stars.

Great rest for the money

Best rest I have shot off of to date. My shooting club has several different mechanical rests and the old reliable sandbags. The DFT when properly ballasted with lead shot in bags is rock solid but will still move around on you. You will have to reacquire the target after each shot unless you are shooting .22's. There is a lot of adjust-ability designed into this rest. Oddly enough, the DFT is designed specifically for AR type weapons with long detachable magazines but these weapons require a lot of adjustment be made to the rest in order to shoot them. Lots of issue with the rear height adjustment with AR type weapons. A 1" or more spacer block is needed for the rear buttstock rest to shoot these type rifles. I cut my group size in half using the DFT and just about any rifle I own. This rest( or a comparable one), a 24 or 36 power scope and match ammo is required to really see what accuracy a rifle is capable of. Highly recommended.

I have owned the DFT Model Sled for 3 yrs. now. I can say it is built like a rock. I use 2-25lb shot bags on front trays and put an added bag over the dual rails near the rear. Shooting my 300 RUM has been easier especially during load development. Recoil from 200 grain Bullets is greatly reduced. I find the Point of Impact the same going from the Sled to a Front Bench Rest and Rear Bags.

Purchased in September 2009 and have used Caldwell Lead Sled DFT many times since. Yes, it will reduce felt recoil when used with two 25 lbs. of lead shot. The elevation adjustments are very coarse and not repeatable. For those who wondering, yes the sled was assembled correctly and all adjustment operate. To use the Lead Sled DFT, I now use sand bags on the front rest and do not rely on the Lead Sled DFT adjustments. This approach works well.I have used many other Caldwell products and generally for the money spent work reasonably well. Please note the the Caldwell Lead Sled DFT is not a high end, precision built rest. It is a good recoil reduction management tool.

If you add extra padding to front support it will cure the problem. Anytime you Rest your weapon on a HARD surface it will shoot high.

One word comes to mind when I think of this item. Junk. Caldwell did a horrible job building this thing. The elevation adjustment is sloppy which results in never being able to get the rifle steady on target. Caldwell should have used finer threads on the adjustment. Just a poorly build item. Good idea though.

All the old timers dont like it there to set in there ways. Some people say the recoil will go back into the rifle and wreck it, only if you screw it to the bench and not allow any give whats so ever 30-40 lbs is perfect for high power mag. If you cut retangle holes in the back rest for a small grip vise you wont have to spend the extra $ for a gun vise. The only thing that is cheap is the lockable jam key that goes into the front head assembly its made out of plastic instead of teflon or a better quality material. After a few shots you don't have to worry about humman error, but there is all ways some brain dead hunter that thinks he can shoot 15 20 shots of 300 mag a not flinch one bit. Yes you have to reset after every shot, you have to let your barrel cool down anyways so back off, your not on the front lines of Gettysburg? Overall great product spend the money two birds with one stone.

I got this for the recoil ...

I got this for the recoil benefits, and could not be more impressed. I added the two 25 lbs. bags of lead shot, which are a must, and recoil from my .300 RUM is almost zero. The gun jumps just a tad, but it is nothing. A few shots from a .300 RUM is tolerable, but doing load development for one can be exhausting. If you shoot the big guns, do yourself a favor and get one of these. If it can hold up to over a hundred rounds from a RUM, it can hold up to anything.

Design looks solid with what appears to be some good adjustment features. In use the rest did not work well at all for my magnum gun. While it did reduce recoil, it was hard to get the gun to stay on target because of the padding on the rear holder and because of the soft rubber recoil pad on my Remington 700. A fair amount of readjustment was needed from shot to shot. The worst thing about this is that my gun shoots completely different from this rest than off good solid sand bags. It consistently shoots 3+ inches higher. I would not buy this knowing what I know now. The quality is good, but there are design issues.
