Oregon Trail make the ...

Oregon Trail make the best cast bullets in my opinion. I have shot several thousands of these .44 bullets and they work great. Little leading even at 1400 fps and very accurate. Good quality bullets (much better QC than my local source)and priced about the same as "regular" hard cast bullets. I only wished they made a hollow-point version!

I really like these ...

I really like these bullets and I'll continue to buy them.However, I have had both severe and minimal leading with the 240's in my 629 Smith.Titegroup,WLP primers produced a generous smearing of lead in my barrel after 30 rnds.On the other hand Win 231, WLP primers exhibited only slight leading to about .75 inch beyond the forcing cone. My 629 has a 8.375 inch barrel.My Ruger SRH, 9.5 inch barrel demonstrated equal and very heavy leading with either load.I wish I had an answer to leading. You may be one of the lucky few to own a gun that accomodates any lead load you feed it without causing you some grief in cleaning.At this point I can only suggest you experiment with powders and primers in an attempt to determine a 'clean' load.Outside of the above, I have found the projectiles to be very uniform in weight and diameter and hardness........I measure these parameters.Very nice product.

I have found these bullets to be extremely accurate and very little little leading experienced after firing some 300 rds from my Lew Horton 3" Smith and Wesson. I have used both 2400 and Unigue for either getting approx. 750ft/sec.An excellent bullet company for the 90% of us reloaders who shoot for pleasure. If you want to drive a bullet above 1600ft/sec just buy your bullets 50 at a time from Barnes.

These are the best lead bullets I have ever used. The faster you run them the better. I am shooting them at 1600 fps from a Ruger Carbine and no leading at all. Accuracy is great also 10 shots in about an inch at 50 yards. With this hard of a bullet you must run them fast to avoid leading. If the round is to slow you will get blow by and leading.

Before loading I sized bullets to .429 using Lee bullet sizing die. Loaded using a healthy load of Unique and fired in two .44 Magnums. One of these is brand new. There was no leading of either barrel. They are very accurate bullets. I can't say what results would have been if they were .431, but they are so hard you can't scratch them with a thumbnail.

I tried them and subsequently did not like them. Leading was terrible. Probable reason: the alloys used create a bullet much too hard to allow proper abjuration. I keep my loadings down around 950 - 1,000 fps in my S/W 29. I switched to an alloy with a Brinell hardness of 15 - and there was almost zero leading! Here, I took a page out of my blackpowder cartridge reloading for my replica .45 Colt and 44 WCF - but in these, I scale down the Brinell hardness scale to approximately 11. When I used harder bullets in the latter 2 calibers, I got some leading. Again: Seems to be a matter of abjuration - and often, a very hard bullet causes too much blow-by and, thus, leading.

Not sure what Oregon Trail uses for their lead mix, but in any caliber I've bought they have exhibited near perfect fill out of the cast bullets for every bullet in the box. No pockets, pits, or pour lines found. They mention using 7 elements for the mix, which seems more than the typical 2-3 base metals found in most cast bullets. I'm sure high QA, and not trying to be the bottom dollar seller, has something to do with it too. Accurate, great quality, no leading.

I have not experienced the leading problems that others have had. Minimum leading which is expected. The real plus is the economy of shooting lead bullets. It allows me to have more time on the range to build skill with my 44mag. For me it is a good product that fulfills my needs at a price I can afford.

This bullet caused the ...

This bullet caused the worst leading I've ever had in a revolver! I developed two loads for my S & W model 624 .44 SPL: The first one was the "Skeeter Skelton" loading with the 240 gr. bullet and Unique powder, moving out about 950 FPS. Not slow, but not outrageously fast, either. The bore was very heavily smeared with lead for about an inch down the bore, and heavily for about 3 inches. I've had less leading from dead soft .45 LC factory rounds fired through my .45 LC Redhawk! My next and last loading was to use to a lighter load of Unique for about 750 FPS: Almost no difference, with just slightly less leading. That was as slow as I wanted to send the bullet down the barrel. The Oregon Trail Bullet Co. folks were very polite, but couldn't offer me any help other than a refund, which I gladly accepted. I've reloaded for 20 years, putting over 100,000 rounds of cast bullets through my Dillon RL-550, so it bothers me to not be able to produce a load that won't lead the barrel. Try this bullet, but don't be disappointed if you have to ask OTBC for a refund.

Very accurate! No leading at all from mid-range loads. It's a real treat not to have to brush out lead, after years of shooting soft swaged lead bullets.
