The Caldwell Lead Sled takes the pain out of test firing or zeroing large caliber rifles and can reduce felt recoil by up to 90%. This exclusive design allows the shooter to add up to four 25 lb bags of lead shot (sold separately) to the base of the rest. The upright rear rest supports the butt of the stock and transfers the recoil impulse to the rest itself, rather than your shoulder. This prevents flinching and the creation of bad shooting habits. The front rest is adjustable for height.

Excellent product that ...

Excellent product that performs as intended. Two notes of caution though. 10 shots from my .460 Weatherby beat up the recoil pad pretty bad. The butt stock rests against a piece of steel with thin padding and the bottom third of the pad is unsupported. Thus the butt with or without a recoil pad absorbs all the recoil without much give. Its like firing the rifle against a brick wall if you use 100 lbs of shot. I now put a slip on rubber recoil pad as an additional cushion and that fixed the problem. Two 25 lb. bags of shot is enough I've found even for the .460 Wtby. The rest has to give some in recoil otherwise the butt and the rifle bedding takes a pounding, potentially cracking a wood stock. All that recoil has to be absorbed somewhere, it's just no longer on your shoulder. Shooting heavy recoiling rifles is now "fun" again.

It does work pretty well, ...

It does work pretty well, but when you have the shot bags added for weight the rest really needs a wind adjustment for left to right micro adjustments.

Lead sled plus is ok for the money. Needs windage adjustment and the front support is very wobbly. Needs a better mech on the front. Repeat shots impossible in moves to much.

The difference between the Lead Sled and the Lead Sled Plus is just one thing. The Lead Sled Plus is designed to hold the 25 lb. weights whereas the original Lead Sled is not. Other than that one thing, the L.S. and the L.S. Plus are identical. Even though the Lead Sled won the 2005 American Rifleman Magazine Accessory Of The Year award. The newer Plus model should take the lead on the additional feature. The choice is strictly your as the one you get. The recoil is absorbed very well. Construction is good, well designed and it works for me being a left handed shooter. At least on the Lead Sled I got, all the parts were there. Adjustments for elevation etc. are all easy to accomplish and the sled is a good buy as is the sled plus.

I had a friend purchase the sled for me based on ratings that I've read at Midway. I shot a TC Encore 209X50 with 150 grains pyrodex, pushing a TC 250gr Shockwave..... recoil was near nothing.... excellent product

Great Except for front ...

Great Except for front rest design. Very awkward and difficult to adjust, and not all that steady. If only they would replace the front portion with the setup used on the steady point rest, then we would have a 5 rated product.

This is a well built heavy duty shooting rest. It allows sight in of the largest magnums without any concern for recoil. Because it is so steady and solid, sight in of any rifle is easy and positive.

This is worth it's weight ...

This is worth it's weight in gold! I read some of the other comments that was upset with having to reset after each shot. I don't care what kind of rest you use, if your going to be shooting magnums or any other type of firearm that produces a lot of hard recoil, you will still have to reset your aim no matter what. I have shot all calibers with mine and I have zeroed a lot of scopes for friends and family without any pain. If your thinking about getting one, all I can say is get it, but if you want a sore shoulder don't buy it.

I was able to get to the range today and actually shoot. I took my new Tikka T3 Hunter Light 30-06 and new(to me) Winchester 70 7MM and used the Caldwell Lead Sled that was made available to me by range members. That may not sound like much, but on March 13th I had a double by-pass heart surgery and less than 3 months later I was able to shoot. This was only because of that Lead Sled. It was awesome, absolutely zero felt recoil with either rifle. For anyone that has the need, which for a while I do, this piece of equipment is worth every penny if you buy one. I spent all afternoon at the range and poked lots of holes with fantastic results and no worse for the wear. If I didn't have one available to me as a member, I would be buying one.
