I have used one of these cleaning rods for about 10 years - yes, the same rod. It has held up very well and I have no significant complaints about the product. The red coating does scratch off when you drag it across the barrel. That's the point; it's supposed to protect the barrel. Like the other reviewer said, if you do it correctly, the coating won't scratch off. If you can't do that, there is a brass guide that slides over the rod and helps protect the muzzle end if you clean from that end. I would like to see the coating to be a little more durable, but overall I have been very happy with the rod set.

This is my favorite ...

This is my favorite cleaning rod. I have Dewey's and BoreTech' and more expensive ones but this rod for the price is very good. Yep the coating comes off. So if you are that poor at getting the rod down the barrel you aren' taking your time or don' have the experience to do it right. Dont blame the rod.....

In my shop, our best ...

In my shop, our best selling rifle rod is the SAF-400 Kleenbore. A rifle version of the rod involved here. What I think is being overlooked here is that the coating is a sacrificial one. The coating is MEANT to rub away in time in order to protect the precious bore from the hard steel core of the rod. The SAF-400 outsells all my other rods for one reason: it is a third of the price of the higher quality rods from Dewey. I would agree that ruining a rod in the space of two or three cleanings would be enough to discourage one from purchasing another but one I trialed in the shop lasted for well over a hundred cleaning sessions and was still acceptable, at a suitably discounted price, to a customer who was in need of the cheapest option I could provide at the time. Sure, you can buy better, but not for the price in my country.

This rod is ...

This rod is unsatisfactory. The coating chips off exposing the steel rod which then damages your rifling. The red paint chips get into every crevice in your gun.

The first time I used ...

The first time I used this rod it worked good to clean one gun. Today, (about a month from purchase) I cleaned two guns and after awhile, the rod came in contact with the muzzle end and chipped the red protective coating. By the time I finished the 2nd gun, it was flaking off in several places along the rod with only a mild bump or scrape against a hard surface. The chips were a pain to clean up as some fell into crevices etc. I am thinking that the bore cleaner I was using may have softened the rod coating. The rod itself, is of good quality and the handle turns freely and a comfort to use. However, the reason I bought the rod was for the protective coating. This is why I gave it only 2 stars. I will be contacting the mfg. to see what they have to say. And no I was not extremely careful in using it, but I did not abuse it either. I used it just as I have my other rods for many years. If I find it was due to my errors, I will correct this review.

Coating is chipping on ...

Coating is chipping on two that I own. Chips on rifling inside barrel. (Yes, it is chipping on the dry one I have to so it is not the cleaning or oil products) These little pieces get into and stick to everything - very hard to get off/out. Buy something else - maybe brass because I don't have luck with aluminum either (especially in 22LR handguns.

This is a reliable and ...

This is a reliable and inexpensive cleaning rod that will teach you how to clean a handgun and how not to. Yes, red coating will flake/scratch off, if used improperly. Yes, it can be a bit of a pain to clean out of rifling, but that - importantly, suggests you're not using a cleaning rod correctly. You are not supposed to drag a cleaning rod across the muzzle/rifling end of a firing arm! Carefully clean from the bore end and this will not happen. When cleaning from the muzzle end, carefully align the rod on both the in and out strokes and keep your strokes consistent. Clean carelessly and you (not the rod) will damage the barrel.
