This box is too short and the Frankford 505 is much better for this application. **DO NOT GET THIS FOR USE WITH THE .221 FIREBALL OR .17 MACH IV. This box is too long and the Frankford 504 is far better for this application. Very durable.

This product has its ups and downs. To be brief, the internal height of the box is such that when it's flipped over, or say, jostled in a range bag, my loaded .223Rem/5.56NATO rounds (with a cartridge overall length of 2.2200~", fairly standard) fell out of their slots and tumbled around inside. My feeling is that this can be attributed to the case's intended use with multiple calibers and cartridge lengths; and for me it's not suitable for the .223Rem/5.556 cartridge and for that round I DO NOT recommend it. I will say that it's well constructed and will last; it has a nice latch on it which is sort of the main thing I look for in ammo boxes. Because the cartridges sit with more than half their case exposed when the box is open, it's easy to pull cases out one at a time, especially nice when bench shooting a bolt gun.

I really love these ammo boxes. I did NOT like the "MTM 100-Round Ammo Box Foam Insert's" that I purchased to go inside the box. You have to cut the foam into 4 pieces to make them fit when the description says they'll fit without the need to cut them down to size.

I just got these, and my goodness they look beefy! Just the appearance and feel of the hinges and the grid that holds the cartridges makes me feel like the MTM ammo boxes will last a very long time. I bought two of the 45 ACP 100-round ones and two of the .223 100-round--4 total. This is the first time that I bought ammo cases and I'm glad I opted to spend a bit more on MTMs than to settle with some other brand. I believe in buying once and getting quality than to buy and replace. I have no doubt in the stories of dropped MTM ammo boxes full of cartridges and having it survive. These things are well-made.

This is an update to my ...

This is an update to my previous review. First, I now have 24 of these boxes, and I ordered 18 for my son. That should tell you something about their quality and durability. Second, the newest batch now has an actual hinge on the lid, so the lid will now lay flat when you open it. This is a great addition to an already great product! If you need a quality ammo box, then this is the one you want!

Just wanted to say that the black ones have a real hinge and is a real improvement over the green or blue ones and I liked those. So I guess that makes it an excellent product for what it's for.

I have 16 of these boxes, ...

I have 16 of these boxes, some of which I've had for a couple of decades. They are solid, durable, they hold .223 cartridges perfectly, and I love that they stack on top of each other. I plan on buying several more. I wish they still made them in the solid red as well.

Good stuff. 100 rnds of ...

Good stuff. 100 rnds of 77SMK .223 and boxes are stackable. Square-ness makes it relatively compact. I would like them to have those roller snap hinges in the back like some other ammo boxes vs. a will-wear-out-eventually-and-crack hinge. It's kinda nice to pop the top and throw it back vs. these where you have to constantly work the top back to have it stay back.
