The Hornady Neck Turning Tool is a great tool for a reloader looking to take their reloading to the next level. It features a micro-adjustable cutter that adjusts in 1/1000" increments to trim the outside of case necks to absolute uniformity for superior accuracy. Hornady Neck Turning Tool Mandrels are required for use (Sold Separately)

Very disappointing. The ...

Very disappointing. The case neck turning tool itself is well made and appears able to make very precise and consistent cuts. My biggest disappointment in this product is related to the mandrels used with this tool. I purchased a set of 3 mandrels in .224, .264, and .308 calibers. All 3 mandrels were either too large to fit into or had to be forced into the case that they were respectively made to cut. After taking careful measurements with a caliper, I found out that the size difference (in diameter) between the case neck vs. the mandrel varied from .004 to .010 inches! I contacted Hornady about this problem and they explained that unusually tight case neck can result from cases sized with different brand of dies. The mandrels Hornady makes are tested to and are within specification of cases sized with Hornady dies. I found this to be funny because 3 different kinds of cases (in 223 Rem, 22-250 Rem, and 308 Win) I tried to neck turn were sized with Hornady dies. Regardless, it looks like Midway should be expecting a set of returned merchandise from me soon.

The cutting tool works ...

The cutting tool works very good. It cuts very smooth and evenly when set properly. The case holder device leaves a lot to be desired. It is difficult to tighten the holder tight enough to hold the case while turning. I resorted to taking the oak shims out of my barrel vise and making a shell holder by using wood clamps to hold the oak shims tight to form a vice while turning the cutting device around the shell. This worked well but is a stop gap measure. Another thing that I noticed is you must use the same neck expander brand as the mandrell in the cutter device. The hornady mandrell for the 6mm is two thousants smaller than the neck expander in a 6mm redding sizind die. This leaves a little play unless you shim the mandrell. Also be sure that when neck sizing that your die is seated properly and tightened down or you could get a slight runout on the neck and the cutter will be cutting the high spot when it really only needs to be resized properly.

I have had my outside neck turner for 5 years. It costs less than the other brands and is just as accurate. It is the biggest so it fits well in the palm of your hand (both turner and case holder). Other brands will kill your thumbs. Also the mandrels are cheap so you can buy two at a time; one for normal thick case necks and the second to sand down for thick case necks.

Quality tool. I've been using one for my .308's for years and my reloads have allowed me to achieve 1/2 MOA accuracy. Getting ready to buy a second one so I can set it for 30-06 and leave it. Yes, I could use the same one I already have and just change the adjustments but I prefer to have two, leaving each set for a specific caliber.

I should not of purchased this. The cutter leaves excessive marks on the neck. I tried several cases from new to used and followed the instructions to use sized cases. But, the idea behind neck turning is to turn the necks before they are sized to relieve pressure on the neck when sizing. If the case does not fit tight on the mandrel, it will leave very uneven cuts on the neck and render the case unusable. I will be looking for a better turner and try to return this one.

I've used this product for a couple months and have turned well over 200 .308 case necks. I find that Hornady could have put more thought into making this tool. After turning several case necks my fingers became black from the aluminum handles, I hade to modify the handles in order to solve that problem and help hold the cases properly. It's also very easy to move the adjustment dial while using the tool and the set screw that is supposed to lock the cutter in place does not. Anyone wishing to make the tool work 100% better: get some heat shrink tubing and shrink it over the handles after disassembling them. Cut out small holes where the screws go through and reassemble. This not only prevents black on your hands but holds the case much better. I've noticed I can put out cases much faster & with better results after doing this. Put a piece on the cutter handle opposite the adjustment dial and tape over the adjustment dial with blue (painters') masking tape.Maybe Hornady will read this and start making the handles as described.As for cases not fitting over mandrels? I have found that it's best to have a slightly, snug fit and that dies, especially the neck expander need to be the correct size. Also cases will vary and that cases with thick neck walls will be very tight after resizing compared to cases with more normal neck wall thickness.

Overall product construction is solid. Durability should be excellent. However, some of the mandrels don't fit my cases well. .270 great fit. .22 loose and thus poor job on neck turnig. 7mm too tight to even use. I complained to Hornady and they send me replacements, but the same problem continues. On the 7mm I am going to have to polish the mandrel until it will turn and then it will be excellent. On the .22 it is too loose for my liking, I'm not sure what I will do.

Neck turning tool is very well made. The cutter doesn't move at all while in use. Case holder does a really good job but you have to remove case lube if you full length size your cases. I purchased a .25 cal and .243 cal mandrel and both fit the case great.

This was my first experience at neck turning. I used the shell holder from a Lee case trimmer and a battery powered variable speed drill. The cutter adjusted easily and precisely, but I noticed that the cutter touched the case neck only at the point of the cutter. Common sense should have suggested that wasn't right, but Ive been very happy with Hornady products and therefore continued. I managed to remove the desired amount of case neck, but had many grooves around the neck caused by cutting grooves a few thousandths of an inch wide, dependent on the cutting depth. A call to Hornady's support number confirmed that the cutter should have been parallel to the neck. That would have produced a smooth cut. To their credit, they are sending me a new cutter. As I said, Ive been very happy with Hornady products and will continue to buy them, but not this one. I have another manufacturer's neck turning tool on order.
