Product Information

Federal Premium Personal Defense Ammunition is an excellent choice for law enforcement agencies as well as concealed carry permit holders. The unique center-post design of the Hydra-Shok Hollow Point delivers controlled expansion while the notched jacket provides efficient energy transfer for maximum penetration.

These personal defense loads feature increased muzzle velocity and energy compared to standard loads, the penetration and stopping power of Premium bullets and reduced recoil. This ammunition is new production, non-corrosive, in boxer primed, reloadable brass cases.

I like this ammo. The 9mm 124gr JHP "red" box (P9HS1) Fed Prem Defense ammo shoots excellent in my Kimber Aegis and SOLO; 500rnds and no jams or misfires. The "blue" box (C9BP) ammo is not as good as this one.

Accurate, reliable, clean ...

Accurate, reliable, clean burning, with controllable recoil in my Ruger LC9. (I am 65 years old with arthritic hands; recoil can be an issue for me.) Also, a real plus is that this round shoots very nearly identically to the more affordable Federal American Eagle 124gr FMJ round, so one can practice with less costly ammunition and be confident that the carry round will shoot the same.

I used this in a SIG P290 ...

I used this in a SIG P290 with a 2.9 inch barrel. It functioned perfectly with a very reasonable recoil. But even in a well lighted range the muzzle flash was very bright and probably would have been blinding if used in a dark house at night.

I have shot a lot of different hp loads, and this is the only one I have had regular failures to feed with. Fed fine in Glocks and xd pistols, but was unreliable in a sigma, and a Ruger p89. Not very high velocity either when chronographed from a 3" barrel and compared with other more modern loads.

There are only a few 9mm ...

There are only a few 9mm bullets I feel suitable for protecting my life. This is one of them. The 9mm was designed to shoot this size of bullet. The 147gr. has a little more punch but travels slower out of the barrel. I have shot cantaloupes and all that was left was juice. I shot a rabbit once and all that was left was legs and blood. They are not too expensive and I have never had a jam, misfire, or any malfunction of any type in any of my 9mm pistols using this round.

I load up my Glock 17 ...

I load up my Glock 17 with this stuff whenever I go hunting in or around southern California. I use it as my defense side arm because we have cougars here. The reason I use it is because a hunting buddy of mine shot a 4x4 mule deer a while back and had to track it. When he finally came up on the deer, a nice size female cougar was feasting on his kill. He startled the cougar and she charged right at him. He unloaded four rounds of the this Federal 124gr JHP and dropped her two feet from where he was standing. That's all proof I need that this round works.
