I like these lock rings. To use them though, I pull the set screw out and drop in a small piece of solder. A lead shot or piece of sinker will do as well...Read complete review

I like these lock rings. To use them though, I pull the set screw out and drop in a small piece of solder. A lead shot or piece of sinker will do as well. Then to make an adjustment you may have to pull the die, loosen the set screw and tap it on the work bench, the lead plug will really hold.

I switched to these lock rings a few years ago and I love them because I can use my wrench to loosen/tighten the dies, instead of chewing up the other kinds of locking rings with a pair of pliers! Works for me for the past few years with no problems.

The absolute worst lock ...

The absolute worst lock rings in the world. The thing is well made but the design of the lock nut is just horrible. The lock nut presses on the die threads and will not hold the ring in place as brass is too soft. I have switched to Hornady lock rings. The most awful , rotten garbage from RCBS!!!

These rings are junk. I buy new split lock rings every time I buy new RCBS dies, it costs a couple bucks more, but it saves a lot of time and heartache in the long run. If you like the wrench flats on these dies, look at the Hornady split lock rings as they come with wrench flats.

Some years back, RCBS used to include excellent, round, knurled, split locking rings with their dies. Later they changed to these awful things. These are a real come-down from the excellent locking rings of the past. These things don't hold well at all; the brass screw is very easy to strip.If I could find a supply of the older rings I would junk these things in a minute.

I dont get it! RCBSs dies ...

I dont get it! RCBSs dies are just great but these rings are terrible. Its almost a let down when you attempt to use their two and three die setseverything works just great, except the setscrews on these rings. Ive torn up about two setscrews for every three dies that I have. So, when youre working on setting up new loads with different bullets, count on going through setscrews on the same rings redundantly. My solution; bought split retaining rings from another manufacturer.

I've been using these rings for several years and not had any real problems. I have had to tighten the set screw a little more than I thought I should a few times but, I've never stripped one. I do adjust the die and then back it out a bit before tightening the set screw and reseating. I then never have to tighten the screw again unless I adjust the crimp. I've been reloading for 26 years. I think these are getting a BAD RAP! Thanks!

I have many reloading die sets made by RCBS and these lock rings are the worst part of the die set design. Everything else in each die set is excellent except these lock rings.The problem is the brass set screws often do not lock the ring against the die housing. Tightening them as tight as possible can still leave the assembly loose preventing the height setting from being saved. The brass being soft results in the hex socket stripping out also making it impossible to tighten it further to achieve a lock.The split ring design with a knurled finish work best. I just use channel lock pliers to lock the assembly to the press.JMHO

For single stage presses ...

For single stage presses the old split ring from RCBS were better. However, for those of us that use high volume, multi-station presses we have to have a lock ring that allows all the dies in place at one time. I had to remove all the split lock rings from my RCBS dies in order to use them in my Dillon. These hex rings can be made to work but you have to replace the brass set screw with a steel one and use a piece of lead shot between the steel set screw and the die threads.
