Used 2 grains below max for H110/WW296 and 2 grains above min. Crimped w/heavy roll crimp in top groove for a COL of 2.187" and used WW Large Rifle Magnum Primer. Fired 16 rounds with the same witness round in each of 4 cylinders to see about bullet pull. Only pulled back to bottom of the groove it was crimped in (0.003" increase in COL or so). Should be just fine as emergency bear medication. Accurate and managable -- will all go into an inch at 50 feet.

I got these to work up a copy of cor-bon's 395gr hard cast round. It seems cor-bon use's a different bullet with a wider meplat. I put one of these 395gr Cast Performance meplat to meplat with a 360gr Cast Performance and they seem to be the same size so these 395's should have a little better ballistic coefficient then the factory con-bon 395gr hard cast with the wider meplat. I weighed several of these Cast Performance 395gr bullets and got an average of 388gr and none over 390gr. I think these will work to harvest African Elephants with my revolver. These should get a Taylor Knock Out score between 40 and 45 loaded in the 460 S&W Magnum. I give them 4 stars because the weight inconsistencies. I really would like to see a .452 Cast Performance bullet in 440gr and over.

The ultimate thumper ...

The ultimate thumper bullet for the .45 Long Colt!!! Loaded over a hefty charge of 18 grs. of H110, and using the lower crimping groove, this 400 grainer will bust right through nearly anything, within reason and a little more. On a recent trip out to the Colorado Rockies, I carried the above load for bear protection in my 4&5/8" Ruger Blackhawk while trout fishing in the La Garita high country. Black bear sign was everywhere and knowing this bullet was on tap was a bit reassuring when walking back to camp after dark with a mess of fish. To test the bullet's penetration, I fired one into a one foot diameter aspen tree. The Cast Performance 395 gr. projectile actually sailed right through the aspen and lodged a full 4 inched into a second aspen that was about 10 yards behind the first. Believe it or not, the bullet was recovered nose-first and could be handloaded again! Very impressive performance for a 36 ounce belt-gun. So loaded, my Ruger Blackhawk is a real beast of a handgun!!!Jimmy Gibson of Ada, Oklahoma

Wow what a bullet. I loaded this in my .460 S&W and it packs a punch. I shot at an 8 inch steel plate at 50 yards that was hanging from wire. It went through the plate and ripped the wire off of the plate. I believe that I picked the right bullet for bear protection.
