Inexpensive desiccant, ...

Inexpensive desiccant, especially on sale. Bought two. BUT once the can lid is off to allow the desiccant to absorb moisture, there is no mesh grate over the silica, and you can spill the can all over your safe. You'll need to add a piece of metal mesh screen to prevent spills.

This is a good value in a silica gel desiccant, and it's well packaged. Silica gel is one of the most efficient desiccant materials available. It should work well in the intended application, which is keeping the atmosphere in a gun safe dry to prevent corrosion.I purchased this product thinking I'd repackage it and use it to protect a few plastic storage containers where I stored my reloading presses and dies. I had seen other types of desiccant with "a built in indicator" consisting of an indicating dye that turns pink when the dessicant has absorbed enough moisture that it has lost its effectiveness. The dye is mixed in with the desiccant, so the desiccant changes colors. That's not how it works with this silica gel, which has a small round screen that sits on top of the silica gel in the can, and a small cardboard indicator card to be placed on top of the screen.I'll need to buy more humidity indicator cards to use in my other containers, or weigh the silica gel and when it gains 10% in water weight, I'll know it's time to renew it in the oven at 250 F for three hours.Good desiccant, but keep in mind that the "built in indicator" is a small card with a panel that changes color.
