The Cold Steel Special Forces Shovel was designed off of the Spetznaz soldiers design as a shovel and a fighting weapon. The head and socket are forged from carbon steel and heat treated for maximum strength. The outside edges of the shovel are sharpened to utility/axe edge and can be easily sharpened to obtain razor sharpness. If you are looking for the ultimate in utility and fighting weapons, the Special Forces Shovel is for you.

I have had this shovel now for a year and have used it for digging drainage while camping to trimming the grass from around my sidewalk to removing branches from trees. Let me tell you it is TOUGH! It's got a good weight, comes sharp (definately need the cover) and does what it was intended for. A much better product than the folding shovels issued to the military. I now keep this under the back seat of my truck and am ordering another for my wife's truck.

I've had one of these shovels for around 15 years and they are awesome tools. It normally lives in my emergency kit in my truck (with jumper cables, flashlight, bungee cords, first aid kit, flares, ice scraper, etc.), but it also accompanies me on all camping trips and excursions into the boonies. I've used it to dig latrines, LOTS of cat-holes, split kindling, dig vehicles out of the snow or mud, fire pits, behead a couple of copperheads, whomped a 48" northern pike in the head to get it to quit floppin', split deer pelvises, trenched around the uphill side of my tent during a downpour, used it like a hatchet a few times, and more. It's taken everything I've dished out with NO problems and the handle still fits tightly. Like posted elsewhere, it comes sorta sharp and you can easily put an even sharper edge on it with a flat file to make it better for chopping, but you better have the sheath for it for storage. I wouldn't have one without the sheath. A few years ago, I took my Special Forces Shovel with us on a week-long canoe trip into the wilderness of Canada, and my three friends and I agreed that it was an indispensable tool in the boonies.

The shovel is defined very cool. But, I feel 5 stars is above its actual rating. 3 and 1/2, as the handle could be a true hardwood, but then again this would also raise the price. I bought this and gave it as a Christmas gift, the recipient loved it. I am sure his rating would be higher.

Very rugged and very sharp. Definately smart to purchase the optional cover, I did and am very happy. Very utilitarian shovel. Looks like it will work on other tasks as well.

This is the PERFECT ...

This is the PERFECT survival shovel. Very sturdy (and thick) shovel head and thick handle. The product image does not show the edges sharpened, trust me it is. It's a "crude" edge, but for its intended purpose, it's fine. The shovel head is slightly flatter than the traditional tri-folding e-tool, but that is the tradeoff for having double capability as an ax. I also image this can be used as an emergency boat or too. I plan on keeping this in my car as an emergency digging tool for snow/ice and love the idea that it can handle chopping duties also. There is a slick finish to the handle (think new baseball bat), and I can image it will get slippery from sweat. I'll probably wrap tennis racket tape around the tapered grip end. The handle is fitted/wedged into the head and two beefy wood screws secure it in place. One small detail that tells me the designers really put thought into making this is they rolled the edge where you'd normally put your foot on to sink it into the dirt, just like a full size shovel. I think the simplicity of this tool is its strongest point: it's a simple HEFTY shovel. As one reviewer posted, this is the world most dangerous garden spade!

This shovel is by far the best I have seen and used. Only draw back is that it is non folding. However I have had good quality folding ones break on me. This one will not break. In my use I can not afford having one that may break. I have on occasion used it with out the handle with good results for the job at hand. (handle is held on by a BIG wood screw). With one side of the spade ground and sharpened, this makes a great weapon for up close and dirty fighting. If you are being deployed this is well worth the cost and weight to have with you IMHO. Not often do I see this top quality for a low price like this.

I have kept a Cold Steel ...

I have kept a Cold Steel Special Forces shovel in my trunk the last few years in my car during Winter time in case I get stuck in snow. I've never had to use it for that, but I did try it out in dirt and it works well. It's also a lot stronger than you might first expect by looking at the picture. Pictures don't due them justice. The manufacturers video on their stie will show you what it's capable of. As far as the sheath goes, it works well to protect other things from the sharp blade of the shovel as it comes almost as sharp as a knife. Save yourself shipping and hassle and take my advice and buy it with the shovel when you buy one. You won't be disappointed if you do. If you don't you'll find out just how sharp these shovels really are. When I got my package with the shovel, it had went through a military tech manual and was sticking out the side of the box! They are both awesome products!

This shovel rocks. Its so much better than my issue e-tool. It's both lighter and stronger. It's basically an old school WWI entrenching tool. It has ZERO moving parts. The steel is very tough but you'll never get it shaving sharp. If you put a steep utility edge on this shovel then edge retention is surprisingly good while digging. This shovel was never designed for major excavations but it excels at digging hasty positions and and cat hole latrines. It chops well beyond what one can reasonably expect of a shovel which is a digging implement not a chopping one. This shovel would be a wicked melee weapon as it has just the right heft to be swung both fast and hard. There is a sheath available for this shovel elsewhere on the net. it's too bad midway doesn't stock it.

Handle feels like a ball-bat and that edge may have a few burrs, but wow, this may be the singularly most dangerous garden spade ever created. Can't imagine actually digging a hole with it though, as blade is nearly flat in profile. Neat for chopping kindling and sticking into trees like a Spetsnatz operator, but would be a lot of work to dig a latrine with it and you'd probably ruin its edge. Surprised it didn't ship with a sheath/cover as that edge really is sharp.
