The Frankford Arsenal Cartridge Overall Length Gage is the perfect tool for any reloader who is looking to determine their Cartridge Overall Length for a given rifle in a matter of minutes.

Technical Information

Fits: Most Bolt Action Rifles
Function: Determine the bullet seating for the rifle being used
Material: Plastic
Kit Includes: Two Clamps that will attach to any 1/4" or smaller cleaning rod
Notes: 1/4" or smaller diameter cleaning rod needed (Sold Separately)
Directions:

Install the appropriated caliber size tip on the end of the cleaning rod (sold separately)

Insert the cleaning rod down the barrel until there is contact with the bolt face then install one clamp

Remove the bolt and drop a bullet (projectile only) into the chamber

Hold the bullet against the rifling with a pencil, touch the bullet tip with the cleaning rod tip and install the other clamp

Now measure the inside distance between the two clamps with calipers(sold separately) and record the measurement

The measurement taken can be used as a gage to check the seating depth setup during the reloading sequence and will tell you the maximum length you can seat bullets until the hit the lands of the rifle barrel

Almost didn't purchase ...

Almost didn't purchase this product because of one review. I found the plastic parts functional and the gadget great and easy to use. The max OAL for my cartridge was MUCH longer than the actual length. That meant greater pressure! It was an eye opener for me. I am now going to go back and check all my rifles. Other methods of determining OAL were not working...this is easy and effective.

A very clever & simple idea. This could be a 5 star product if it was made out of metal instead of plastic. It flexes too much in use. You can install it 10 times and get 10 different measurements with the same components. Not very accurate as is.

Here's how to get the most accuracy out of this or any similar tool, even clamps from the hardware. Use 2 duplicate clamps (and thank Eli Whitney for the concept that led to modern mass production). Push both clamps together on the rod and tighten them.With your dial caliper touching the rod, measure the space the 2 clamps occupy and divide it in half. Measure the COL as described in the instructions, only measure on the OUTSIDE of both clamps with your dial caliper touching the rod your clamps are attached to. Subtract the half dimension from when your clamps touched and you have it. Snipers and armorers were doing this before we were born. It works.

I loved the idea and the ease of use. However this item would be a 1000% better if made out of any type of metal. Just has too much flex to it for my liking.

I've used this tool since Midway started selling it. Properly used and cared for, it's a great tool, does what it's supposed to do. With this tool I can load better ammo than I can buy. Without some way to measure and set accurate COL, you can't load better ammo than you can buy. I would not be without it.

This is not bad, it could ...

This is not bad, it could defiantly be improved on. If it was from someone else they would do it better and charge 50 bucks for it, so the price is ok. I used a different system and it seemed to work ok.. It works out that the inside dia is 1/2 of the outside on the clamps so this induces a slight error if its not perfect. I measured the outside diameter then subtracted the length of the clamp that is used to measure where the bolt sits. This removes that error and also lets you pick where to measure from. I look where the best contact with the muzzle is and measured from there. I also pressed a bit to hard on the bullet so the bullet was probably seated in the lands a little bit, which is ok for a max overall length. A couple of my rifles like to have the bullet slightly in the lands. They could definitely do better with materials used to make the gage, a nice wide piece of aluminum maybe .50" would make it more stable on the rod and remove the error of the possible flex in plastic and the error that happens when the clamp might not be sitting perfectly perpendicular to the rod. Lastly the flex in the clamp as you tighten it on the rod leads to error. I would say when using this product dont expect to be within .001", maybe the best is +- .003"... I hope this helps.

Hold on guys. I'm giving this a 5 star rating on idea alone. Buy the product just for that....OR....Go to the hardware store and buy some of those cheap aluminum security clamps that you put on aluminum windows. They will clamp onto a rod square and straight. Use one to mark distance on a cleaning rod from muzzle to the bolt face; use a second to mark distance to your bullet set against the rifling.Distance from the clamp faces that touched the muzzle is best overall length. Very repeatable....

I bought this and messed up all my OAL. Spend the money and by a Stoney Point. There was a .02 difference between this piece of plastic and the Stoney Point which I know is accurate. It was a great idea but the plastic bends when you tighten it down.
