Product Information

Lyman 1-Cavity Bullet Molds are made from solid leaded-steel and machined to an exact and smooth super fine finish. The molds are then heat treated (that is why they are blue in color) and feature hardened steel alignment pins to provide many years of bullet casting service. Sprue plates are made from solid steel, ground flat and held tightly in place with tempered steel spring washers and screws. In addition, break-in is often half the time required for iron molds. Mold handles are not included.

This mold is the best ...

This mold is the best bullet design I have found in a 44 mag. I had a lot of trouble with the nose coming out perfect so I drilled out the sprue plate about 1/64th larger to allow the lead to flow faster to the nose and now they come out perfect 8 out of 10 castings. They hold 1-3/4 group out of a 14 inch contender at 75 yards.

This is one of the few ...

This is one of the few molds that was designed correctly. Not because its a HP but because the forward band supports the bullet nose. It is one of the most accurate bullets I have used out of my S & W 629. I have shot one deer and two turkeys with this bullet and belive me you don't want to use it on turkeys. This is one bad bullet.

This one requires a ...

This one requires a little less preheat time than the 9mm version before it starts casting perfect bullets. I've noticed that with all my molds, regardless of brand. Smaller bullets require hotter lead and mold for good bullets to cast. I use spray graphite as a mold release and get some fantastic hollowpoints with this mold. Well worth the money. I wish it was available in a plain base version, since not all of my .44 shooting is with full house magnums. Maybe I should buy a second one and modify it to a bevel base cavity. Then I'll have both profiles. If you want a good .44 mold for hunting, get this one.

Great mould, but it does ...

Great mould, but it does require more effort on your part to get good bullets. Keep the pin and lead very hot and add a little extra tin to the alloy. Designed to alloy the use of wheel weights as the primary alloy. Since this is a little harder, the cavity is larger. Even if the bullet nose breaks during expansion, there's still plenty of mass in the main body of the bullet to punch through deer sized game. This is a must-have mould for anyone who hunts with their 44 magnum.

My Dad cast these for me ...

My Dad cast these for me and I know he uses WW for most molds. I downed an 8-point Iowa whitetail with this bullet from my 9.5" Super Redhawk .44 mag. The buck was running fast when hit with a double lung shot (lucky) at about 10 yards, he went about 60 yds and dropped dead. The bullet passed through the deer leaving lung-burger between the holes. The bullets weigh in at 270 grs. w/gas check before lubing. They shoot as accurate and as hard as the best factory jacketed loads that I've tried out of my SRH. Strong case crimp required for best results.

After casting about 40 ...

After casting about 40 bullets the mold was hot enough to cast almost perfect bullets. On most, the rims around the "crater" were slightly imperfect. Much to my delight, I discovered that when I sized them in my SAECO sizer using top punch # 45-200,(flat surface) the "crater" became perfect from the downward pressure. The bullets dropped from the mold with little effort on my part. I did smoke the mold with a wooden match stick. Havent shot them yet but expect them to be fine shooters.

This is one of my ...

This is one of my favorite molds. I bought it to use in a S&W 629 and a Marlin 1894 and it works well in either one over Alliant 2400 powder. I have recently started using it in a Thompson Center Encore and have seem impressive results using plastic sabots. Highly recommended!
