The Hornady Powder Cop Die is the perfect for your progressive reloading press. Just install the die after the powder drop station to automatically check dropped charges. The powder cop die has an internal stem that will move up to display a white o-ring that is even with the surface of the die when the correct powder charge is in the case, when the die is properly set. If there is no powder charge in the case the stem will not rise. If there is an overcharge of powder, the stem will lift the O-ring well above the surface of the powder cop die allowing you to easily see the case is over-charged.

This die works great in ...

This die works great in my Hornady Lock-N-Load AP. It's really not necessary for cartridges like 9mm where you easily see if the case is filled (and that overflow if double charged). However, it's really useful for cartridges like .38 Special (it easily indicates charges of 2.5 gr. Clays) and for all rifle cartridges. It'd be nice if you could adjust the indicator level with a top screw (a la bullet seating depth) rather than adjusting the whole die body -- but still a solid five stars.

The powder checker works well with wide - straight wall brass. (45 ACP, 38 etc) It works only with normal charges of slower burning powder, as it will not indicate with small charges...Read complete review

I thought this COP die ...

I thought this COP die was working great until this last saturday. It is very difficult to tell minute differences in amounts of powder while loading .45 ACP. I always make sure to check the position of my COP indicator at the top of the press stroke, but always have worried that the rod compresses the powder a bit. Well I just put some handloads through my Springfield GI 1911 and apparently had a hot load. The case was bulged, primer blown through, and ALOT more recoil than a .45 ACP should have! Luckily no one was injured and the pistol was not damaged but I will be pulling 300 bullets this week for sure.

I'm normally a fan of Hornady products but I'm not sold on this one. Out of the box, the rod was sticking in the die. I polished the rod in a lathe with very fine sand paper, that seemed to help. I also found that powder sticks to it too much and was concerned that it could change charge volume from case to case with it sticking. Improvement is needed.

I thought this would be a good idea, and it probably is if you use a larger amount of powder. However when I drop 5 grains of powder in a 45 ACP case, I can not tell much diff between that and a double charge of 10 grains. It also has some sort of plastic fingers in it that broke before I could get it lowered enough to check the 5 grains of powder. Seems to work the same way with it or without it anyway. It also seems to hang up inside the die a lot as well.I would suggest the RCBS lockout die, or go without. I really don't see how someone can double charge a case on the LNL to begin with? Unless you do it on purpose to check this die. But something like this would be handy in case of a empty case so you wont get a squib. I am going to buy a new RCBS lockout for mine and box this one up.

I've used his die for a couple thousand rounds and it does as claimed, it has saved me a couple times. But powder sticks to the rod and makes a mess on the shell plate. (The die has been cleaned multi. times and I even polished the rod end but the powder still sticks )

Good for what it is, but ...

Good for what it is, but what you must remember to look at this 'Powder Cop' on each stroke of your press. Forget to look at it each time, and you may as well not have installed it!I love the Hornady stuff so I hate to say this: do yourself a big favor and don't buy this 'Powder Cop', but instead get the RCBS Lock-Out Die (Product # 536792).The RCBS Lock-Out die doesn't require you to look at it to do the job of checking your powder level. It will stop your press cold if the powder level is not within its limits.I have both the Lock-Out die and the Hornady Powder cop, now the Powder Cop sits in a box and I don't use it anymore.You won't be sorry if you go with the RCBS Lock-out die.

This die does all the things claimed, however, unless they have changed, it only applies to 22 cal and above. I wanted it for 20 cal& 17 cal.

I have one of these ...

I have one of these powder checker mounted on my Dillon 650 in station 3. It is well designed and works right. It has saved me & my gun from destruction a couple of times due to no-charge or over-charge loading my 357 and 44 magnum cases. I was about to buy another one for my son, but read a midway post on Lee Universal decapper die - how one reloader modified this die to be a powder checker. I tried it and it works. However if you want something that checks powder load effectively out-of-the-box in a progressive press, I would recommend this Hornady powder check die...
