Product Information

Lyman 2-Cavity Bullet Molds are made from solid leaded-steel and machined to an exact and smooth super fine finish. The molds are then heat treated (that is why they are blue in color) and feature hardened steel alignment pins to provide many years of bullet casting service. Sprue plates are made from solid steel, ground flat and held tightly in place with tempered steel spring washers and screws. In addition, break-in is often half the time required for iron molds. Mold handles are not included.

As typical of Lyman molds, this mold was well made and precise. Bullets cast from it and sized to 0.430" have proven very accurate in smokeless cartridge 44 Special and blackpowder cartridge 44 Special and 44 Russian. This mold has a very deep, generous grease groove that allows its bullets to hold sufficient lube for black powder use, which not all molds have. Bullets from this mold have proven to be the most accurate of all other brands, varieties, etc. of numerous others tried in my 44 Special Colt SAA revolver.

Purchased this mold last year based on the reviews here. This is not the quality of the molds owned by those who have casted with this design for years or decades. The mold I received casted .006 out of round (.432 to .426 in the extremes).

I have the single cavity ...

I have the single cavity version of this mould. Inherited it from an another handgun shooter. My Lyman 429421 drops bullets weighing an average of 255 grains and .432 diameter. I cast from range recovered lead, wheel weights, plumbers lead, fishing sinkers...etc. I load using 2400 powder with 22 grains. I size the bullets using the Lee pass through .430 sizer kit and liquid Alox with no leading issues. I have bagged cow elk, and numerous deer with this bullet at ranges up to 50 yards using a SW model 629 handgun with open sights. I'm sure better results can be made with a scoped 44 mag rifle. This mould is supposedly the famous Elmer Keith design. In my use, this mould drops excellent accurate cast bullets.

I have used this mold for over 20 years, and it still gives me good service. On a good day I can crank out over 800 bullets. With my son and me both shooting our 44 magnums with this bullet. I make huge amounts of bullets with this bullet mold to keep our shooting with in our budget. I highly recommend this mold for ease of use and the high quality bullets that I make with it.

This is a good overall bullet for the .44 caliber closely resembling the Elmer Keith design. I have used it for over 30 years and have had good results hunting and target shooting with this round loaded with 2400 powder at around 1,250 fps in a .44 mag. and at around 1,000 fps for accurate plinking. I use tin hardened wheel weights and they cast very easily, usually needing little sizing. The faster velocities do lead a bit but the accuracy holds, even at hundreds of yards shooting at rocks on hillsides. It's a very good choice if lubed and crimped properly.

After testing all manner of bullets in heavily loaded .44 Specials and mags, Elmer Keith designed this #429421 bullet as the best design for accuracy and punching large holes thru everything up to and including elk. There have been many copycats, some good, some poor, but this is the real deal and has some key features that are important, full diameter driving band, crimping groove, wide lube channel, wide base, more weight up front for increased case capacity and ease of casting. Ive used this bullet for many years in all types of .44's and by god, Elmer, you were right!

I have had this mold for many, many years and it is well broken in. My very favorite bullet for the 44 Mag. Very accurate and especially good at long range. Elmer Keith was right on with this design. Lyman moulds are hard to heat up and I put mine on the side of the pot while the lead is melting. My method is to never use oil the sprue plate while casting, use a little wax it will stay and work well longer. I adjust the weight with pure tin. Hopefully your mould won't require much sizing as sizing damages the bullet. Size no more than .001 over the bore diameter. Pack the lube in well with no voids spaces or air pockets make the bullet unstable. For practice I use 6 grains of Bullseye behind this bullet @ 245 grains. Have shot 1 1/2" groups @ 50 yards. An outstanding all around bullet for the 44 Mag.

I have two 4 cavity molds. This bullet is shooting very well out of my Ruger .44 Mag, and it is easy to cast too. Good mold for .44 Mag.
