Production of IMR powders dates back over 200 years when the company was originally founded by E.I DuPont. Available for use in many reloading applications, the IMR series of powder is trusted by reloaders all across the globe.

IMR 4227 is the Magnum Pistol Powder in the IMR lineup. If it says Magnum, IMR 4227 is the choice for true magnum velocities and performance. In rifles this powder delivers excellent velocity and accuracy in such cartridges as the 22 Hornet and 221 Fireball.

Important Information:

Do not exceed the loads displayed in the reloaders guide.

Never mix any two powders regardless of type, brand, or source.

Never substitute any smokeless powder for Black Powder or any Black Powder substitute.

I started using H4227 on ...

I started using H4227 on the advice of an article written by sheriff Jim Wilson. I used it in 45 colt and 44 special. Well guess what, they quit making it! I called Hodgdon and they assured me that IMR4227 is so close to the same that my loads wouldn't change much if at all. They were right. I did have to experiment a little but in the end my original loads for these 2 calibers didn't change by much and I am now burning this stuff up. In fact I ran out yesterday and am about to get more. It really works well when it comes to pushing heavy bullets in the big bores at good velocities.

The experience with IMR ...

The experience with IMR powers and specifically 4227 span two(2)generations of my family. My dad taught me to reload starting with his old Stevens .22 Hornet powered by IMR4227. Impressive, consistant performance has always been exhibited by this product in the .22 Hornet. Now I load for my dad and BOTH of his .22 Hornets, the old Stevens and his newer 77-22hornet Ruger bolt action. Both rifles think loads powered by 4227 are tops. I can highly recommend the IRM line and 4227 in paticular.

I was searching for the ...

I was searching for the most accurate load for my .30 carbine when I happened upon this powder. A combination of IMR 4227 and a Lyman #311410 cast bullet from wheel weights gave me excellent results at 100 yds. I also use this powder with a LEE TL 358-158 SWC cast from wheel weights and loaded as cast in my NEF .357 Magnum rifle. Hard hitting and very accurate. Somewhat hard to find on the dealers' shelves but well worth the search. This is one of my favorite powders for cast bullet loads.

I've used this powder ...

I've used this powder with Hornady XTP's in 240gr and 300gr and Speer 240gr HP's. Full power loads shoot great in my S&W Model 29 with 8 3/8ths barrel. I was expecting a huge wallop, but that never occured. Meters fantastic and very consistent. I use a scope on my pistol and can attain excellent groups. It makes the pistol fun to shoot. Great powder.

When it comes to stoking ...

When it comes to stoking the old .45 Colt for 'business' it is my opinion that there is no finer powder than IMR 4227 over a 265-285 grain cast bullet. John Taffin brought up this powder's usefulness in the grand old cartridge to me in an email. I'll admit I was a little skeptical until I tried it. It is now my standard.

I have been shooting long ...

I have been shooting long range pistol silhouette for years and this is THE powder for my Dan Wesson Super Mag. It fires the .357 Maximum cartridge and with the 180 grain Speer TMJ it will hit the half size animals at 200 meters with ease and knock down the full size targets with authority. I have also used this powder in the .30 Carbine, .357 Mag, and .44 Mag with impressive results.

For full power loads in ...

For full power loads in 44 magnum and 357 magnum this is my powder of choice. It can be a little smoky in 357mag. but I give it 5 stars anyways. It meters well and gives great accuracy and performance.

I highly recommend this ...

I highly recommend this DuPont powder for .44 Rem Mag loads. It seems to burn a bit dirty sometimes, though use of Magnum instead of Standard primers seems to help there. And consistency and accuracy have always been top notch. One pound cans weren't lasting me long enough, so the larger 8# size is just the ticket!
