Recoil buffers are an easy and inexpensive way to eliminate damage of critical components by preventing the metal to metal contact of the slide or breech block with the frame. Made from a high density polyurethane formulated for maximum shock-absorbing characteristics, the recoil buffer is a drop-in part.

Technical Information

Material: Polyurethane

Notes:

Due to slight parts changes over Ruger's production history, this buffer may need minor fitting to install. Sandpaper will remove material if needed.

Recoil buffer installs between bolt or bolt carrier and whatever the bolt or bolt carrier stops against when the bolt is fully retracted during firing (installation location varies with the specific firearm).

Buffer absorbs the shock from the action operating, rather than having metal to metal contact at the end of the bolt travel.

Service life of the buffer is 800 to 1,000 rounds.

Buffer will not be damaged by oils or solvents.

Part 2 of a review. The ...

Part 2 of a review. The buffer installs by pulling your bolt carrier spring and guide rod from the receiver and placing the buffer up against the receiver, and replacing the spring and rod. Pull on the bottom of the buffer and make sure the rod is in its hole in the receiver. With the bolt locked back, you should have an 1/8 of an inch of space in front of the buffer. When mounting the factory stock, it was a tighter fit. My Hogue OverMolded stock fits on great with buffer installed. Recoil is reduced and so are my group sizes. To me the buffer is the best thing you can do for your Ruger, also about the most inexpensive. It will also help your scope last longer.

When I installed the buffer I found that the bullets would not strip off the magazine right and the bolt would not hold open on the last shot. I also had problems getting the bolt back far enough to lock open manually.The buffer is too thick to let the bolt go back far enough to work properly. I had to split the buffer lengthwise in order to make it work. Not an easy thing to do safely as the material is tough stuff. Buffer Tech should eliminate this problem by running a closer check on their quality assurance. The buffer was thick enough I ended up with two of them for the price of one.

Buyer Beware

I should have heeded the warnings of others. I have sanded the buffer to half of its original thickness and my Mini-30 still does not function properly. I doubt that the buffer will last long once I get it thin enough. I'd bet that I can achieve the same effect with a couple of cheap nylon washers (without giving myself a manicure with my Dremel).

Installed this on my Mini-30 and rifle would not pick up the next cartridge in the magazine. I tried sanding it down to a thinner thickness and the gun would load but the bolt would not lock back after the last round was fired. I got to the point that it was so thin I felt it did not do much to cushion the bolt so I took it out. this one did not work for me.

I perchased this product for my 580 tactical and I have had to sand it down 3 times and it is still too thick for proper function. I would think by now that Buffer Tech would address the fitting problems on the newer series of Mini 14's or offer two styles, one for older rifles and one for newer rifles. It does it's job but it would be nice if it did so out of the box instead of having to do all of this sanding and fitting. So I am only giving it 2 stars.

The recoil buffer is about an 1/8" too thick for my 1986 Mini-30. Will not allow the bolt to retract far enough to catch the magazine when empty or use of the bolt stop button.

This recoil buffer does not work in a Ruger mini-14 of the 581 series! It does not allow the slide assembly and bolt sufficient rearward movement to allow feeding of the rounds off the top of the clip. I removed the buffer and all works well. As others have reported the buffer is too thin! I made a new buffer with two thickness of .092 rubber mat cut 1' x 13/16 square with a 13/32 hole ( a paper punch works fine as the hole size is not that critical) in the center of new mat pieces to accommodate the spring. It works great! The mat is far more compressible than the extremely hard Buffer Technologies buffer. I think their material was not doing much buffering due to it being so stiff. I wish I could give it less than 1 star.

This part functions well, but not right out of the bag for me. I installed it on a 186 Mini-14. It was a very tight fit requiring a significant push on the recoil rod to get that to snap in place the first time. After use and a few cleanings the hole is an egg shape and less effort is required. I guess it is better than being loose. For the first 250 rounds or so, the bolt would not lock back, but now it does so consistently. Also as a note it does not fit well with a Tapco kit, but nothing 5 min and a pen knife couldn't cure. (That did not influence my rating as we are talking about an aftermarket stock.)

The buffer was easy to install; although the directions were not clear. I'm new to the mini-14, so an installation drawing would've helped tremendously. The Ruger disassembly instructions on YouTube helped out a lot. My Mini-14 is new and has never been fired. I used a belt sander w/ 120 grit belt to effectively change the buffer thickness. I look forward to try out the weapon on the range this weekend.

This is an outstanding product for when it comes to protecting your weapon and keping it as long lasting as posible although you do have to modify it by making the hole big enough for the op rod.

Put on newer ...

Put on newer Mini-14(built around '09/'10). No problems. The main thing I have noticed is the only metal on metal noise is between brass and extractor. Works pretty good. No help on recoil but there isn't much anyway. It has about 500 rounds on it, so I will see how much longer it will last.
