This measure Case Length ...

This measure Case Length only, it is not a like the Regular Case Gages. The correct way to use it is to insert the case from the bottom and set it on a flat surface with the groove facing you. Measures Case Length only and for that it does an excellent job. Wilsons does not make a regular case gage for this caliber.

This gauge has helped me cure my .30 carbine reloading problems. Cases stretch even after one firing. Just put the case on a flat surface and gauge over top. Check the overall length of case on the machined groove on top of gauge. Simple to use and a good reloading tool. All my reloads work great in my Ruger Blackhawk and M1 Carbine now.

First of all, I'm a great believer in case gauges. On bottleneck rifle cases, I use them to properly set my sizing die, and on both rifle & pistol I use them in the final quality control steps. Wilson rifle gauges are good because they're tight -- they tell me if a case is bulged or otherwise defective. This product is a disappointment because it's STRICTLY a case length gauge, as clearly stated in the instructions. In fact, the case will only go into the gauge if you put in in the "bottom" of the gauge, set it on a flat surface -- then you can look at the steps on the top to see if your case is within spec. If this were a bottleneck rifle or conventional pistol gauge, you'd drop the case in from the "top". I suspect the reviewer who said cases "didn't fit" missed the point. And unlike standard Wilson rifle case gauges, it's NOT too tight for fired brass to drop in. However, if you drop the case in from the "top", even a new factor round won't go -- the taper runs the other way!I'm disappointed because I thought I could use this for my quality control testing, but this simple gauge doesn't tell me anything I can't learn from dial calipers! Wilson, you should make a longer version of this gauge like a rimless pistol gauge, with a chamber-like inner ring at the bottom. THEN we could use it to be sure ammo is proper, and properly crimped, and we could still use it for case length measurement! That gauge I'd happily buy. The existing product will be returned...

I have about a dozen case gages on my reloading bench, but I bought this one because I was having a lot of trouble with my reloads not chambering properly due to headspacing problems. It had nothing to do with the case length, so this gage turned out to be useless to me. I was hoping it would check the headspacing on my cartridges. Now I have to chamber a loaded case in my carbine to check the headspace, not a very safe thing to do. It would have been so easy to make this gage capable of checking headspacing.
