There is less than 2 inches of tang to this machete, one bolt through the top holds the blade in the cheap plastic handle and the second bolt just keeps the blade from pivoting, the tang has a slot that slips over the bottom one barely. The first time I used this thing to clear some brush, the blade went flying. Get a Cold Steel Machete, best machetes for the money and avoid these.

I'm a surveyor and I depend on my machete to clear thick brush in the mountains and get me were I need to be. So when I saw the gerber gator online I read up on it in the forums across the net and thought it would be worth a try. When I got the machete it had a really dull edge on it but that didn't bother me because I liked the handle and the lightweight and the ability to cut branches high off the ground with the saw back. I sharpend it and used it for 2 days. It worked well enough until I took a wack at a 3" oak tree the blade almost went through but when I pulled up to remove it and strike again the grip was the only thing left in my hand; the blade broke clean off, this piece of junk isn't full tang and the handle grip is made out of cheap plastic. Why would gerber, a respectable company with a good reputation, make a machete that's going to be used again and again on a daily basis and then not make it tough enough to last a week, needless to say I won't be buying any more gerbers. The quality just isn't there anymore. Go with the ka-bar kukri machete, it's worth every dime and sharp as a razor, has full tang, is well balanced and thick enough to be used as a pry bar. Excellent quality and it won't leave you disappointed.

Bought one and used it for an hour handle broke when I caught a 2" tree with it, not a full tang handle. saw part worked ok, It took 30 seconds to get though a 1" dead branch. Package states "Made in China."

We brought these machetes in for some contractors; and within one day they all came back with broken handles and bent blades. The steel (or aluminum!) is of the worst possible grade, and the handles will break if anything harder than thin soft branches are hit. Do not buy.
