Tool hooks edge of berdan primer and levers it out of the case's primer pocket with a pin in the end of the tool.

Primer-removal process is significantly slower than decapping boxer-primed cases.

Replacement pins are available, product number 134-121.

RCBS does not recommend using this with crimped-in primers (military crimp).

To Use:A.)Grasp Case Holder Rod in left hand and place fired case over it.B.)With your right hand grasp De-capper, and hook De-capper jaw under the rim, or case extractor grove.C.)Place the point of the De-capping Pin into the dent from the firing pin on the primer. Press the handle gently, but firmly down and eject the primer. In the case the primer fails to eject, adjust the De-capping pin by loosening the Allen Set-screw and sliding the pin up or down, then tighten the set-screw and retry procedure.D.)If De-capping Pin is too long, it will damage the case primer anvil.E.)Do not use this tool to remove crimped primers found in most military ammo cases.Check the Web for videos on this subject I located several with a simple search.Just make sure you can get the primers from a supplier.

As others have noted, there is a learning curve with this tool.Sometimes you will chew up the rim of the case, and a little polishing on the hook can ameliorate that.The largest case I have decapped is 24 gage shotshell brass.This tool has undergone upgrades since it was purchased from Lachmiller.

Takes a bit of practice ...

Takes a bit of practice and thought. Not suitable for all types of Berdan brass. Works best with those larger cases such as 8x56R, 303, etc. Cases need to be sorted by brand/headstamp before depriming as not all have the same cup/anvil characteristics. You'll ruin a few cases and break a few pins learning. Spare pins to dig out the primer are available from RCBS, but I make my own out of spring stock (piano wire). Takes but a few seconds, and you get good at it after making a few. Once you get the hang of it, it works pretty good and is much easier than the "hydraulic" method of depriming.

Product received from Midway without correct instructions. Midway refused to send correct instructions or accept return, referring me to RCBS, who dropped me off a phone call and refused to acknowledge e-mails which copied Midway. The product might actually work, but considering the learning curve everyone talks about, it sure would be nice to get the instructions without spending hours chasing them.

This tool does indeed ...

This tool does indeed require a bit of practice in order to get proficient with it. But once you get the hang of it, it works like a charm. I've used it successfully on cases for 7.92x57, 6.5x55, 8x56R, 7.5x55, and 7.62x51.I've not broken or damaged the decapping pin once. Expect that you will damage a few primer anvils while setting up the correct amount of protrusion for the decapping pin though.I've found that it's best to start out with too little decapping pin protrusion which will make the pin penetrate too shallow into the primer. The result is that the primer will tear but not pop out. Adjust the decapping pin protrusion a little at a time until it pierces the primer without damaging the primer anvil. It can be a bit of a slow process getting it set up at first, but once you get it set it works great.

Great tool, well ...

Great tool, well designed. It takes a few adjustments to get it right, but it really works quickly, once you get the hang of it. Be sure to start with the pin in the primer indentation, then place the cartridge rim under the lip of the tool. The pin should be angled back slightly, and pierce the spent primer at an angle. I did about 100 cases in 15 minutes, only had to turn a few to get another shot at the primer.

This decapping tool is ...

This decapping tool is the best designed Berdan decapping tool I've seen or used.The decapping pin is cut at an angle not perpendicular to the centerline of the pin.This cut must make the point of the pin point towards the moving claw.Once adjusted and practiced with, it works like a charm.I ruined 8 cases before I got it down. The cases I practiced on were Berdan Primed range brass in a caliber I do not use, so it was no loss.I get about 100 cases deprimed in a half hour or less.
