I bought the barrel vise ...

I bought the barrel vise that these come with and I give them 5 stars ! !! Have usedto build 25 plus rifles in the past year and am just now having to replace them. I've not even used the blank one yet that comes with the set that you drill and fit yourself.Hers a few helpful hints.Buy the rosin sold here at Midway...Get you 2 washers to place under the nuts between the clamping part... if not the nuts will tend to gouge the top of the clamp and get you a good 1 1/4 inch wrench to tighten when placing barrel in vise.Trust me I've only had a few barrels that I could not get off with this set up and they had to be cut and drilled out.Not sure what the guy that rated it so low was doing but sounds like he needed a little advise.Remeber you are going to run into that barrel/action that is not coming off.If this set won't remove it then you are going to have to use other means anyway.

Works fine for my ...

Works fine for my purposes. Unlike others, I have had no issues with the oak bushings. Coat the surfaces with rosin, tighten the vise until your eyes bug out, and the action will pop loose. Ive even used a three foot cheater on one action, and the barrel didn't move at all.

In my experience, ...

In my experience, removing just one barrel will tear up a pair of these bushing blocks. To reduce barrel slippage, I apply a coat of rubber cement to the hole and allow it to dry before clamping it on the barrel. This works a lot better for me than the lead shims.

Wood bushings simply do ...

Wood bushings simply do not provide enough holding force for many old military actions. If you have a 60 plus year old mauser or enfield.....this most likely won't grab hard enough. I have tried rosin which did help, but not enough. If you keep tightening the vise, you just compress the wood. With aluminum bushings this would be great.

Didn't rate it any lower because the option was not available. My real rating is ZERO. Just spent a whole evening trying to remove a factory M700 barrel. The wood shims - all 3 sets that come with the barrel vise- are utterly useless to hold the barrel. Even taking the springs off the vise so the nuts can be tightened to the ends does not provide enough holding power to keep the barrel from turning with the action. The action wrench works but the barrel wrench is useless. Either Midway doesn't test its products before selling them or doesn't care enough about its customers to take products that don't work as advertised out of its catalog. If there are any engineers at Wheeler Engineering, they had no part in designing this contraption. Instead of wasting your money on this pay a gunsmith to turn the barrel off - or buy something that actually works. A real disgrace. A better investment would have been for Midway to develop a workable method to hold the barrel rather than printing the 'happy talk' directions that don't work on how to use this product.

If the blocks were made ...

If the blocks were made from a wood of consistent density, they would be functional, but red oak can be compressed and crushable under the forces generated in the otherwise very well made Wheeler vise. Beech, White Birch, or Maple work fine in it, the oak is, in my opinion, only good for kindling. As such, until or unless they decide to market a functional alternative, I would pass on them and continue to simply make my own out of the correct hardwood.
