I would give this product a higher rating but it is the only one of it's type that I have used. While it has universal gun applications and is in fact labeled "universal bench block" it has a number of features specific for 1911 pistols. It has a recess with boss in it on the "top" side that lets you press the mainspring cap down for easier removal of the main spring cap retaining pin. I used this feature to replace the guts of my Springfield ILS mainspring housing. On the "bottom side there is U shaped channel that will support the slide both right side up and upside down. It has a notch for the front sight for sight staking operations. There are a number of features for 1911 operations that this block has specific features for, barrel link removal, removal of hammer and sear pins, mainspring housing pin, rear sight drifting, front sight staking, dressing slide rails, dressing the ejector port. While this block is hard, slick, non-marring, and light weight these qualities can work against it if you use it on a slick surface and put any lateral pressure on the block or apart in the block. You can bolt it down, clamp it, or like I did, put down some sandpaper on double sided tape (carpet tape) to keep it from skidding on my kitchen table. It would be well worth the price even if it hadn't been on sale.

This block is definitely tailored for the 1911. I tried to use it to remove pins from the gas block on my AR-15 rifle, and it was difficult to find a place where it would sit securely in the block.If you need a 1911 block, this is the one for you. I would hesitate to call it universal, however.

A must if you work on your own 1911

This is must if you work on your own 1911. It really is the thrid hand that you need fron time to time. Works really well for lining up pins on barrel work and anything you need to do on the slide, new sights or restake an old one. Solid construction and a stable work platform.

I've only had it a couple of weeks, and I've used it several times. No, it's not perfect for every application, but, it's been handier than a shirt pocket working on ARs'. It's definitely worth it's price.

Use it a lot. Yes, it has many 1911 features, which makes it ideal for me. Only minus is the 'stob' to use for mainspring pin removal/installation. It's a bit big, and I find the big pin on the hammer/sear tool is easier. Otherwise, I use this almost everyday. Unsurpassed for knocking sights out.
