The Lyman Case Length Headspace Gage is perfect for reloaders looking to achieve the highest degree of safety and accuracy. Lyman recommends that all cases be inspected after resizing to ensure that the proper headspace dimension is maintained. Simply insert the case into the gage to check that it does not exceed the maximum or fall below the minimum allowable headspace. If the case exceed the maximum allowable case length the case mouth will exceed the length of the gage.

Have Lymans case gage for .45 and 9mm worked great. The 223 was not very accurate kept showing me I was not sized right. Went with the Hornady gages and had no problems. I would have driven myself nuts if I had just used this gage and tried to get it to work. Just ended up throwing it away.

For you guys that are having trouble using this gage, you should make sure your resize die is properly adjusted so the bottom of the die just kisses the shell holder with the ram full up so you are fully resizing the entire case. For you guys that are having trouble with the shell head on once fired military lake city or Speer .223 brass, make sure you don't have a "nicked " case head caused by a rough miltary automatic ejectors. I chuck "nicked' case head military brass in a drill and spin the shell heads against a fine file................poof the shell goes right into this fine case gage after the brass case head "nick" is removed. This fine case gage in .243, 308, .223 does an excellent job if you know how to use it. I have used this gage for over 8,000 rounds of once fire military brass. Never a problem with it. Keep it clean inside with a bore brush because a speck of dirt or brass filing lodged inside will give you a bad reading......clean is the word.

The quality of this tool is seriously inconsistent from one gauge to the next. My neighbor and I have the same .223 caliber gauges. I can insert a case into my gauge and it doesn't slide all the way to the base. My neighbor can slide the same case all the way down to the base. Now I still have the same question I had before I bought this thing...."Is my ammo REALLY safe to shoot?" Do not recommend!

Experienced the same thing others have mentioned. The tolerances of this gauge are incorrect, and about 30% of my cases can't be measured in it, because they didn't machine it to the proper spec to allow all standard head stamp sizes to fit.Was planning on buying an L.E. Wilson, but they weren't available at the time. Can't use a lot of my brass until I buy a better quality gauge.Disappointing.

I have a Lyman Headspace ...

I have a Lyman Headspace gauge for both .40 S&W and .308 and absolutely love them.You cannot imagine how I felt when I found that the one that I received was out-of-spec. While the Body gauges correctly within specification at .376, the Rim (which can be as large as .378) does not gauge and appears to be too small. I put my calipers on the failed-to-gauge rounds and found that none of their rims exceeded .377. Those rims that were .376 or slightly smaller gauged correctly. My conclusion is that the product was not manufactured correctly.I attempted to work with Lyman to return the gauge for correction, but was told by them that they had no records of any .223 gauge being out of specification.I returned the gauge to Midway for a full refund.Thank goodness for Midway!

Lake city case heads, as ...

Lake city case heads, as well as some other cases, will not fit into the gage. I wasted a lot of time troubleshooting before I discovered that. A simple check to do before testing your case is to place it head first into the hole to see if it will fit. If the head fits, the case gage will reliably indicate your headspace. If the head does not fit in the hole, the gage is worthless. If you use a wide range of brass, do not get this gage. If you use only Winchester brass, as one example, the gage works great! I concur that the hole was machined too small.

Up to 50 percent of cartridge case heads are too large a diameter to fit properly in case gage, the hole for case head was machined about .002 of an inch too small. I decided to send the gage back to Lyman.

As of 5/20/11 the 223 gage is too tight for military 5.56 brass like Lake City. The gage doesn't have enough room to clear the rim of military brass like Lake City, it's worth mentioning that this unit might work well with brass that doesn't have such a stout (I'd say reliable) case head. To explain the problem imagine placing the cartridge backwards into the gage and the rim is simply too large to fit inside. l ended up milling the gage to ignore rim diameter, as I hate returning stuff. My gage had previously been opened.

Am using Lyman case gauges for .40 S&W and 9mm. Read the reviews and was a bit hesitant due to some of the less than perfect opinions. Got it anyway due to may past experience with Lyman products. This is an exact & simple gauge used to determine if your case is the right length as well as having been sized properly. Stick the sized case in the gauge and observe the smaller hole at the opposite end to ensure that the brass does not protrude out. If it does then case trimming will be needed. This gauge likewise clears cases for direct use in my Lee collet die, bypassing the full sizing and trimming steps. Economically priced gauge which is highly recommended to monitor quality brass preparation.
