Product Information

The Secure-It Large Pistol Security Box is constructed from heavy-gauge steel, lined with soft foam and features a removable security cable (1,500 lb test cable included) for attachment to a solid structure. Perfect for concealed carry permit holders who sometimes need to temporarily store a firearm in a vehicle. This box secures with a key lock, includes 2 keys and meets FAA guidelines for air travel. This security box will fit N frame revolvers and large semi-automatics. The standard version has a hinge on the short side, while the long hinge version has a hinge on the long side.

Note: If a strong odor exists from the cable coating, run the foam through the washer.

When I purchased this security box, I was not expecting too much as the price is very low for such an object. I am quite happy with the obviously well thought out design and I utilize my box in vehicles where it can attach via the cable to seat posts, seat belt loops or other locations. It is also easy to conceal behind or under the seat. I have also used it in hotel rooms and favor placing the box under the sink (if it can be made to fit out of site) and wrap the cable around the drain and water pipes. The reason I didnt give it five stars is that I believe a strong fellow could maybe bust the cable loose from the box with a big pull. Aside from this, using this security box shows a good attempt to secure a handgun that could be the factor that might keep a gun owner out of hot water in a legal or civil liability case concerning responsible storage of a firearm. I will continue to use this security box and for the price, I may purchase another one!

This is an ok lock box, mine required a little work though. When I got this safe the locking arm was backwards. I had to unscrew it and flip it around. I also had to take out the spacer between the locking arm and the screw because it mis-aligned the arm. I also had to insert a very thin cardboard shim between the locking arm and screw to stop wiggle and apply thread lock to the screw to stop it from backing out. Once these fixes were applied every thing is fine. Lets be honest this is the lowest common denominator of firearm storage. However, aside from some minor quality control issues this is a decent storage box to use under a car seat. I still plan to buy another because you can't beat the price or convenient size. Fingers crossed!

Overall, I am happy with this product, but have a few complaints. First, the foam has a terrible odor, but can be removed with a couple clean/dry cycles. Second, the lock doesn't operate smoothly and needs some graphite to smooth things out. Neither issue was a big deal to correct, but one shouldn't need to fix problems on something new-in-box.

The case looked just perfect as my solution for a streamlined case to carry when I fly. The cable could be wrapped around the internal frame of the suitcase and the box could still be pulled out to unlock for TSA agents. Its size and the fact it was steel was the selling point for me. The main reason I'm returning it is the combination lock assembly is the lowest quality lock I have ever seen. It looks like it could fall apart at any time. I can only imagine it not opening properly or not locking properly during a TSA inspection and having to choose between not flying to my destination and surrendering the firearm to TSA. As a side note, I don't know what the chemical is that makes the foam smell like it does, but I can't imagine any that smell that bad can be good for you.

Like some others said the foam smells awful. Smells like a combination of gasoline and mothballs. I washed the foam once and that didn't help much. Soaking it in soap right now. Had my carry gun in this in my car for an afternoon and holster smelled like the foam for a little while. I would buy this with the expectation of having to replace the foam.

I would NOT recommend this item due to it being of very poor quality and low security. The latch knob is made of plastic and can easily be broken with the twist of just a pair of pliers. This releases the latch. Also, by using a paperclip, the pin on the piano hinge can by pushed out and the box opened in 5 secs with no noise. ...sorry.

Fits a full sized 1911, ...

Fits a full sized 1911, MUCH more secure than a glove compartment, and smells really bad.I'm going to let it breathe in the garage for a few days and see if that cures it. If it doesn't I'll just put new foam in it.For what this box costs, its a good deal even if I do have to replace the foam. It will be kept in my car secured to a seat mount.

For the price it's a very good way to secure a handgun in a vehicle or other location outside of your immediate control. It would have got five stars but the foam does have a strong chemical odor. No smell when the box is closed but I'd hoped the company had corrected this issue by now. Well worth the $$$$.

"Heavy gauge steel" = 21 gauge...kinda thin I think. Item description says nothing about revolvers having to have no more than a 4" barrel...my 6" barreled Ruger comes no where close to fitting. (Yeah, I know, I should have measured my pistol length before ordering, but a "Large Pistol Security Box" that will accomodate up to "N frame" revolvers should hold a .357....right?) By the way - the box does/did have a strong odor. Wiped the cable down with alcohol and washed all the foam in warm, soapy water then rinsed and let air dry (all day in the sun & wind) and it still has a noticeable smell to it. Go figure. I won't be ordering any more of these.

I hesitated purchasing ...

I hesitated purchasing this item due to several comments about the smell of the foam material. As I could not find any other lock box that met my needs and was this inexpensive - I took a chance and purchased three of them (one for the car, and two for the home). When they arrived, the foam did have a noticeable pungent, petroleum smell - but not unbearable. I did not find a replacement for the foam, so I kept the original foam that came with the box. After a couple of months the smell has faded away. The box works as well as expected (I bought the ones that had a key lock). I would not hesitate to purchase this item again.

Great little temporary ...

Great little temporary security case for my 1911 or other valuables. It does smell quite a bit at first, but if you let the foam inserts air out for a day or two and clean the inside and outside of the case with a good scented cleaner it goes away easily. I'm very pleased with my purchase and won't feel nervous about having to leave my firearm unattended when I'm traveling.

The SecureIt box is great and functions how it should but the cable that comes with it has such a bad odor that it stinks up the entire room it is in.
