The RCBS Case Master Concentricity Gaging Tool is a tool designed to help reloaders create the most accurate ammunition possible. This tool easily measures neck concentricity, uniformity, thickness and bullet run-out to ensure that all reloading equipment is setup to product the most accurate rounds possible. This tool checks several things. You can use it to check for incipient case head separation, by checking for thin spots in the case wall. You can measure case body runout, neck runout, and bullet runout at any point you wish. If you don't know what runout is, if you roll the cartridge across the table, and the point of the bullet wobbles up and down, that's runout. The smaller it is, the smaller your groups will be.

In 20+ years of reloading mostly straightwall cartridges, RCBS products have been a mainstay for me. In the past year I have spent a lot of time and $$ trying to get it right with bottlenecks. The result, for example, is that my Savage bolt-action 30-06 will now put 5 holes in paper at 100 yards that can be covered by a quarter by laying it over the same hunting backpack (for a shooting rest) which is carried in the field. Such accuracy for this rifle occurs only if the bullet runout is .002" or less. Thus my first choice, upon learning that this variable must be measured, was the RCBS Case Gauge. Unfortunately, it turned out that this product is not user-friendly. One must have the hand dexterity of a magician to get a decent 360 degree readout. And even then, the values are skewed because of the way that it measures. The case lays in two v-notches set at the extreme ends of the case body. Take a good look at the product picture. You must create even tension on both ends of the case by pressing the case into the v-notches with palm down and fingers outstretched. You are pushing against the spring of the indicator which levers down against the bullet, forcing the case up against your fingers. Now using those same fingers, try to rotate the cartridge accurately. At times it seemed impossible to get a correct reading the full 360 degrees without a slip. To make matters worse, small inconsistencies in the case itself, each time they touch the v-notch, show up as false variations in bullet runout. That is annoying enough. But the biggest drawback, in my book, is that the readings on the RCBS are high. In frustration I switched to the Forster Case Inspector, and am glad I did. The precision of the Forster derives from the fact that the point of reference for measurements is the cartridge axis, an imaginary or real line that passes through an object and about which the object turns or seems to turn. Well built. Works well for measuring neck and bullet run out (concentricity). It can also measure neck wall thickness, but the process of measuring that is somewhat difficult. A dedicated tool for measuring neck wall thickness by another manufacturer works better at that task. This RCBS tool has one more tricks up its sleeve - it can measure case wall thickness. It is a little difficult to do, but can be done. I am not aware of another tool that can do this.Overall a good buy.

There actually is not so much choice of concentricity gauges on the market, so I cannot compare this tool with anything else. But bullet concentricity is important to accuracy, and this is more or less the only tool that can give you an insight into it. Buy it and use it!

Excellent value and craftsmanship allowing accurate readings of your consistency in reloading. For over a year I have loved it. Axial run out, however, takes some practice to exert consistent pressure while rolling the case in the mini-aluminum v-blocks. I have at least 12 dial indicators that cost more than this entire set, and tried different ones with it. It is very accurate since it's total length reading capacity is just .250 inches. It just takes a little practice to use, but the proof came through at the pistol range for me. Buy it.

I've owned and messed with this tool for several years but have never been entirely satisfied with it. I now seldom use it. You can measure neck thicknesses but there is slop so technique is very important to get repeatable readings. You can check run out but it is very very fiddly and the v-blocks are soft and wear quickly. The large heavy direct acting indicator and its tiny ball point are not the correct arrangement for measuring runout on small radius objects. It does however work very well for mass production case length measurements.

This is a well thought out design enabling you to check case neck run-out, thickness, and is also a convenient way to check cases for beginning signs of separation.I only go to this level of case sorting for limited volume "special" loads, but I was pleased with this units function.

I saw Dennis' comment and almost didn't buy it. Now I'm glad I did. I see the problem with the tip of the indicator being to the right of both V-blocks. The indicator pushes down on 1 end of the cartridge making it hard to keep the round steady for measurement. But I set it up slightly differently with the tip of the bullet on the V-block so the indicator is resting on the bullet ogive in between the V-blocks. It works as good as any other gauges I tried and has more features built in. I especially like the case head separation probe. It takes the guess work out of a potentially dangerous situation. And best of all, the price. I love it.

Very easy to use and with informative instructions. It has helped me identify good and bad brass lots since some lots wobble less than others. I've found other uses for it including measuring how much a full lenght die sizes the body. I set it to measure a point below the shoulder keep lowering the sizing die until I like how much it reduces the diameter of a fired case at that point.
