The RCBS Universal Hand Priming tool is an excellent hand priming tool for the reloaders looking to get maximum sensitivity and feel from their hand priming units. This tool uses a universal shellplate which will accept virtually any case from the tiny 32 ACP to the large 45-70 Government, eliminating the hassle and expense of using shellholder. The tool also features a patented safety gate which helps to isolate the primer seating operation from the primer supply virtually eliminating the possibility of tray detonation. The removable primer tray correctly positions the primers before they are seated and will work with any manufacturers primer packaging.

I've used this for about 6months and have yet to have any problems. Lately I have had to change back and forth from large to small primers and now that I've done it ten or fifteen times seems a waste of money to buy a second one. I timed it the other day just to find out and did it in less than 2 minutes but my watch is not a stop watch! But that seems easy enough that I'll use the money for bullets or powder etc and not another unit. Does ALL I need want or desire from a priming unit. I didn't like the looks of the plastic sleeved where the tray goes in but it's held 1000's of rounds to date. I prime my cases with it prior to use in my Dillon progressive press so I get nicely primed rounds and it is worth it for the quality of finished rounds. After all the BLAH BLAH, if you buy it you'll like it. Remember when all else fails read the directions!

All and all, if you have 2 of these tools you have a great system. The small primer plug and the wrench are the problems. I wrote to RCBS about this and they sent me a new small primer plug/punch and a new wrench. This combo was worse than the originals that were sent with the tool. The wrench is not deep enough for the small primer punch. The end of the punch is rounded(expected) and allows the wrench to cam over the lobes of the primer punch and causes it to jam; that being the case you need a pair of pliers to pull the wrench off the primer punch when the small punch is installed. The new primer punch just spun around in the old wrench. All this torquing around to get the wrench off can't be good for the tool. After the 2nd, 3rd and 4th email (**Editors note***- emails to RCBS) about this problem with no reply, I guess I am left to dangle in the wind by myself. I will say though that the tool works very well once it is set for the primers you want to seat.

Takes Practice to Use

I use mine to prime .338 Win cases. I have an older priming tool that uses shell holders and bought the auto unit to avoid having to change the shell holder. I use the older one to load 30-06 base diameter cases. If I had it to do again I would have bought another one of the older units as they are easier to use. This one works okay but you have to get used to getting the case in properly. Even then you'll get one now and then that doesn't line up quite right. Sometimes the case will also pop out of the spring jaws of the priming tool. Then you have to get it into the right position to finish the primer seat. I'll continue to use mine, but if it should break, I'll replace it with one of the older types that do work well.

High Value Product

This is ideal for working up rifle loads, where you are only handling about 50 cases or so. The best part is sitting in front of the TV on a cold winter's night and priming cases.

Loading it is really easy, it seems very reliable in placing the primers exactly where they should be.

Shortcomings - couldn't find any! It not what I'd use for priming a few hundred cases - but that's what progressive reloaders are for!

I recently purchased the universal primer after losing the small primer rod on my traditional RCBS hand primer. (after a quick email, RCBS sent me a new one free of charge). It performed flawlessly as expected from RCBS products. As Brian mentioned, the wrench works fine to screw in the large primer pin but not the small - no big deal - I just screwed it in by hand. The only other thing I noticed is that it takes slightly more pressure to remove the case from the auto-adjust clamps versus the shell-plate - again, no big deal, you just push down a bit and slide the case out. The advantage of course is not needing shell holders - something especially important in a survival situation when you can't run to the store to get the right shell-holder. I highly recommend - even if you have the old style.

High quality tool, easy to use and separates primer being loaded from those in the hopper; an important safety consideration. Did not tire my hand out after about 250 cases; I could not say this of any other hand primers I have used. No need for expensive, easily lost case holders, the universal jig works great!

I thought I liked this at first but the first time I tried to prime 45LC cases I found a big problem with the Universal Priming tool. It will not always hold the case in place while the primer is being seated. About every third case pops out of the jaws with the primer not fully seated. And there's another problem I see, primers do not seem to fully seat as they should. A last problem is primers flipping over on their side on their way up the ram to the case. Thank heavens I still have my 20yr old Lee Auto Hand Prime. I was able to correct the batch of poorly seated cases and prime the rest of the unprimed cases.

The tool worked well for a while, but does spit 45 Colt and 454 Casull cases out. It won't hold on to the fairly shallow rim. I was using it last night and one of the pins that holds one end of the spring that applies pressure to the shell holders broke, allowing the spring to fly out. The tool is useless. Waiting on a response from Midway about what to do with this thing. I've only had it for 5 months and primed a few hundred cases before it broke. 2 stars because it worked well for a while. Depending on how the replacement is handled, might be a one star rating.
