Necessary for the 500 ...

Necessary for the 500 S&W. This paired up with TPS steel rings and a Leopold vari x-III make a great hunting set up. Provides a solid surface to mount any device you want.

This is the one to get. ...

This is the one to get. No one else makes a one-piece steel base for H&R/NEF single shot rifles that has true Picatinny spacing. Might as well go Picatinny, since you've got to mount your scope high enough to clear the hammer spur anyway. None of the aluminum models out there give you as much leeway in adjusting ring position/eye relief. Sure, it weighs an ounce or so more, but on a varmint gun, who cares? And on a big game gun, a little added weight for balance and to add some mass in the face of all that recoil isn't the worst thing you can bolt onto a Handi-Rifle or Sidekick.
