Used 165 gr Speer Hot Cor ...

Used 165 gr Speer Hot Cor in my first go at handloading for my Browning 30-06 and have been more than impressed. Loaded with a moderate amount of H4350 - approximately 308 velocity, according to a couple manuals. First 3-shot group at 100 yards was just under 3/4-inch on breezy day with wind blowing in from about 10:30.Took a very nice 9-point quartering at acute angle at about 35 yards. Deer was actually pointed almost directly away from me, but gave me a shot when he turned his nose around to smell me exposing the back of his right rib cage for the shot. Bullet travelled through two ribs on near side and a rib and through shoulder blade on far side of deer. Bullet was found poking half-way out of skin. The deer travelled less than 10 yards after impact. Retained weight of bullet was 128.4 gr or 77.8% of original. Bullet expanded to 0.553" or 1.8x original diameter.I would call those results ideal considering the amount of bone and tissue through which the bullet travelled.I won't be using another bullet any time soon. I might experiment a little with increasing the charge, but why mess with a good thing. I'll check the drop at 200 and see if it holds up.

This is an update to my ...

This is an update to my previous review. I shot a buck broadside at 65yds with this bullet last Sunday morning. Bullet performance was great. The exit hole was bigger than a half-dollar. The buck went down hard. I am very pleased. Great accuracy and performance. My actual velocity was 2856 fps with a charge of Varget 2/10gr below book max. Great bullet for reloading in .30-06!

All Speer Hot-Cor rifle ...

All Speer Hot-Cor rifle bullets are accurate and tough and this one is no exception. Shoots very well from my '06. I tried only one load and shot 1.25" groups using H414 powder. Took two does this season and dropped them in their tracks with chest hits. The wound channel was quarter size and all the way through. I was pleased that the wound channel was not oversized on a 150 lb animal. I was concerned that the bullet would either not open up enough or over expand and destroy too much meat. It appeared to be very controlled expansion.

Sometimes plain Jane is ...

Sometimes plain Jane is just plain good. I recently acquired a Browning 1885 in 30-06 and needed to hunt with it in less than a week, due to loaning my other 30-06 to my father-in-law. I hastily determined my throat length and set the seating die to .005 off the lands and loaded a dozen rounds with IMR 4350 using CCI Large Rifle primers. The first four shot 100 yard group was .679"! These bullets appear to be very consistent. I made my hunt and took two deer with the load, one of which was green scored 123 B&C and is my personal best. The bullet shattered both shoulders and exited. The buck took one little hop and piled up, performance was spectacular. I highly recommend this bullet, you can pay more for fancier bullets but for whitetails and down why would you want to.
