For anybody shopping for these batons the closed lenght for the 21" is 8". In another review the 26" was stated to have a closed lenght of 9.5". I am pleased with the functionability of the 21" but wish I had bought the 16" instead because it would be lighter and shorter. It could more easily be carried out of sight in a pocket. The 21" is carried when my wife and I go on our daily walk as protection against neighborhood dogs.

Great product. To the person who has a hard time closing the baton, you have to thrust the head of the baton down ward on to a very hard surface, such as concrete, the baton will close easily. If on a walk, thrust on the side walk, street pavement etc. Thrust straight down and it will close.

I bought several of these batons in each length but I do prefer the longest one. The baton has a spring clip inside to keep the segments from extending unless you swing it sharply. Once extended, it stays deployed and it really should be that way if you use it for its intended purpose. Rapping the end on wood didn't help in stowing the segments but if I take the end, rap it straight down on concrete, it will release the segments to slide into the handle. These are a great value for the price and after I got my first ones, I reordered several more. I am an avid cyclist and after being bitten by a dog, I keep one on each of my bicycles.

The baton is comfortable to hold in the hand, but is extremely hard to close. I have given up and just leave it open. It needs an assist to closing it. Much to hard.
